Hello all,
I'm new to this forum and a new user of Tracktion, but not new to recording though.

Jules... This is a great piece of software. Thanks!

This weekend I was finishing up a soundtrack for a promo video when I needed a piece of software to re-edit my wav files and mix down again (the video guy had made some changes at the last minute  ). I was away from my studio and didn't have any suitable audio software on my laptop. Quickly I got online and searched for a suitable freeware/demo program. I stumbled across a review at a site called "Tracktion faction" on this great software called Tracktion. The site erroneously stated that the "demo period is now unrestricted use for 2 weeks, after which periodic bursts of white noise are presented until properly registered". They forgot to mention that files can't be rendered in the demo version. Having only 2 hours left before my deadline I quickly downloaded the demo version and did a fast remix to line up the soundtrack with the new video edits. Finished mixing in just one hour... whew... I thought to myself 'man this software is easy to use'. I hit the render button and followed all the steps only to find out that it wouldn't render (since it was the demo version). I sat there in shock realizing that I only had an hour left. Since the program seemed pretty useful and I didn't have any other options, I went to Mackie.com to check on purchasing the program. I was relieved to see that it was only $80.00. I purchased a key, rendered, and then handed the finished soundtrack to my colleague with 15 minutes to spare.

Since then I have been toying around with this program and I like it a lot! I can see it easily replacing some of my other software. The interface is very streamlined and usable while still boasting top quality features. I'm glad that I stumbled upon it. I had read about it before but quickly dismissed it because the reviews that I read stated that it was great for a beginner. What they need to say is that Tracktion is great for all.

I use an Akai DPS 16 for tracking and have used soundforge 6 with Izotope's Ozone3 for the final mastering. I also use Reason for computer music stuff (videos mostly) and have in the past synched it to Acid via rewire. I think that Traction might end up replacing those most of the time. Traction also runs great from my laptop.

And that's the story of how I found Tracktion! :D

In response to RonC...

I usually record to an Akai DPS16, which is a 16 track hard drive stand alone unit that does 24bit and up to 96kHz and has 260 virtual tracks. I use a joemeek vc3 compressor preamp a Maudio Duo DA/AD convertor-USB interface. On the PC end I have Reason, Adobe Premier, Izotopes Ozone3 mastering plugin. Most of my origional stuff is very acoustic. My songs typically consist of a few guitar tracks, drums, percussion, vocals (lots of harmonies), and various world instruments like the didgeree doo, djembe, tin whistle, rainsticks, chinese flutes and whatever else I can get my hands on. I usually do all of my recording, editing, and mixing on the Akai DPS16. It has actual faders and sounds great, it also does all it's internal processing at 56bits as opposed to 32 on the pc. I then import the mixes (i usually do about 10 mixes of one song) into the pc, do some more editing, pick the one that I like, and apply any mastering effects and multiband compression using Tracktion and Ozone3vst (used to use soundforge).

When doing filmscoring I will mix on the pc or on the DPS16 depending on how much of the instruments are live and how much is composed in Reason. That's about it.

Superfly,

Something that came for free with your Tracktion: ACUMA Final Mix mastering plugin.

Try it the next time you're ready to ship a Tracktion project.

It's a 'filter' that you drop in down in the bottom right corner. It's found in the '3rd party' folder where all of the plugins are registered.

I've used it a couple of times now just to dress up some old .wav final mixes I had from other sequencers.

Use the 'Acuma Master to CD' preset. If you stink at mixing (like I do, but I'm learning), it can help alot to fill out a mix without pumping.

You might just put the Isotope Ozone on the shelf!! This plugin is worth the cost of Tracktion alone, in my opinion.

What a friendly welcome for a new user! Cranky today, aren't we? :smack: Get more sleep, that'll help with that, you know. Or get laid more often.

I've actually already fiddled with ACUMA Final Mix during the last few days. Seems like a pretty solid mastering plug-in. It seems to be a little more basic than Ozone, but basic isn't necessarily a bad thing. However, Ozone seems to work flawlessly with Traction and I know the program pretty well. When I run Ozone through Soundforge it can cause my USB soundcard to hiccup every once and a while. Traction seems to handle plug-ins a lot better than soundforge6. I will continue to play around with Final Mix. It will be nice to have two mastering plug-ins to choose from.
