My biggest showstopper with Waveform 9...

By the way, I got a special transport play/pause key on my computer keyboard but it is not recognized in Waveform... so I cannot test it...
Does work with FL Studio and Reaper though (while Ableton ignores it too)

And the question is:AGreen wrote:Yes I spoke too soon. It doesn't work for me on all plugins either.PierreG wrote: Re-mapping start/sop to Ctrl Spacebar didn't work for me either.
1) is there a problem in Waveform, that windows in front in general block every key press
2) or are plugins blocking the keyboard completely no matter what key is pressed????

In that case, I'm glad you don't develop any software I want/need to use.Trancit wrote:I´ve never seen any bug reports/ problems user had, where it turned out, that keyboard "manipulations" where the reason for that in the official forums of Cockos (Reaper), Ableton or Image-Line...
Again for me, it´s proof enough, that there are perhaps problems in theory but not in the real world...

I really think there might be a simple shortcut fix for this.
I will program a hotkey program that sends the space bar to Waveform. I'll let you know how it turns out this weekend.
Probably only do this with Linux and Windows since those are what I use.

After some thinking about this:
I noticed, that all DAW´s, which have eliminated this problem completely have their own Wrapper window for plugins...
Is this the way, how they can control easily, which keys are passed to the plugins and which are send directly to the host???
If so, would such a wrapper got more benefits for Waveform???
Like plugin sandboxing (or better crash protection), easier preset management etc. ...?

Not quite sure what you mean by "wrapper window", we do have our own window (hence we're able to put the sidechain menu etc. in it). The problem is that if the plugin is focused, that gets first refusal for key presses.

Somehow I cannot attach the images here to the forum so I send them via the request page from your tracktion website...
What I mean is... the other DAW´s don´t have any plugin in foreground... they got their own window in foreground, which shows the GUI of the plugin, but the main window belongs to the host itself...
I think, that´s the whole trick they use and that´s how they control every key stroke coming in... besides additional functionality, which is often very helpful...

Just an example, which seconds my guess...
In Reaper, bridged plugins appear as floating windows, which then cause the same problems with keyboard stealing...
Same for some plugins, which open floating windows in some cases (like MUX Modular)...

in the microsoft world, it's all about "subclassing", and messing with the event queue. often being done with ASM code.
the logic about passing on some events further down the line of listeners, or eat up the event, etc., can become quirky.
first newbie calamity would be to mess up processing speed and thread sync logic.
because those listeners might work under quite different philosophies or lets say paradigms. though there are guidelines, the OS does not really prevent you from doing very exotic stuff.
perhaps e.g. you can eat up a keyboard event and pass it on only to a befriended window through some extra data pipe, and also duplicate it to another friend window, no matter what happened to it in the previous window etc..

I cannot say I understand what you are saying, but if it´s down to efficiency:
Reaper has a very flexible and very good working system of let the user choose what keystrokes will be send to which place you like no matter what window has focus and it´s still by far the most efficient DAW outside... cannot be a big deal though...

Two years on, can anyone recommend an external controller or footswitch that works for them? i.e something that can be set up to stop/start playback when the spacebar can't.

Do you HAVE a keyboard? You can just set it up that one or 2 of it's MIDI keys can be used for transport controls... Not so great if it's 2 octave, but a 61 key midi you could possibly forego the top few keys as start/stop, record, rewind...
If it's guitar or singing, that's another matter.

Thanks asprog, that looks like a good option. Was it easy to set up for other functions and so on?
Thanks Peter, I had no idea you could do that - where would you set that up?
