[SOLVED] MDrummer: Only playing breaks ?

The current behaviour is that, if a MIDI key corresponding to a break is played, the break will play and will be followed by a pattern being played. Is it possible to only play breaks and no patterns at all from a MIDI keyboard ?

Cheers.

UPDATE: 'SOLVED' in the subject line only concerns the question above. There's another question in this thread about playing empty patterns.

I it possible to have a completely blank pattern? And just use that to tell MDrummer to play nothing?
Honestly, MDrummer confuses the heck out of me. So maybe that's a silly idea. Might work though.

I already asked about having blank patterns being played.

I just created a MIDI item.
The first note is C4 (=stop) and the last note is just any note, to make a sound. Without that last note, it's just silence on the track :)

Have you seen the original question ? :)

Take a pattern like the following.. Erase all notes and press play. See what happens.

In the example above the woodblock is muted, as per the original question resolution.

Turn off sequencer mode in Rhythm Editor> Settings> Additional> Advanced.
From info:
"Sequencer mode is enabled by default. In this case MDrummer automatically switches from breaks and intros back to beats, stops playback after the outro and possibly automatically plays breaks (fills). You may want to disable it, for example if you want to edit breaks."
BTW, the wording "possibly automatically plays breaks" means "automatically plays breaks if the 'automatic breaks' setting is enabled."

Thanks. I found the quoted passage in the user manual. This works very well.

Hence a short F0 note at the beginning of a repeating 4-bar loop yields some kind of drum solo. Very interesting.

So many Melda plugins in such a short time ... 8)

Cheers.

No need to look through the manual, just hit the ? in the Advanced header or hover over the 'Sequencer mode' button then press F1.

I'm not sure what you mean by this.

Each time F0 will be hit inb the short loop MDrummer (at least in the default config as I haven't fiddled around with options much, and using a drum kit and pattern I used) will come up with a somewhat different fill. Depending on BPM, this will sound like some kind of drum improv. Using the no-sequencer mode.

These things are difficult to discuss (and comprehend).
Things I'm thinking:
Firstly, and this is not relevant to the issue but is relevant to communicating about the issue....Is your F0 playing a break rather than a beat? If so, I'd say you have a MIDI note octave display offset of -1 happening (in DAW)...that's fine, I just want to know that when you say F0 you mean note 29?
Now, assuming F0 is triggering a break.....select that break (the F key) in MD's keyboard.... do you have more than one loop in the loop index list to the right of the keyboard in MD? Is random loops turned on in Additional settings? If so, then I'd say that every time you play F0 (on your keyboard or as a MIDI command from DAW) you're triggering randomly one of the bunch of loops available from the 'index list'. Remember, the keys of the keyboard are loopboxes, each loopbox can contain one or more actual loops. MD's factory Rhythms usually have just one loop in the BEATS loopboxes but several loops in the BREAKS loopboxes.
Am I on the right track?

I think I know what's going on. :) What I've described is something cool. Not a problem at all. I've tried to no-sequencer solution you gave, then I fiddled around and found out that cool thing with F0 (yes, playing a break) being hit repeatedly and sounding like an improv. I like improvs :) And yes, there are 24 different breaks to choose from, from within F0. The is the acoustic funk - basic 18 setup.

All in all thanks for that no-sequencer tip. It really opened the possibilities with MDrummer at this stage. I never doubted in the capabilities of MDrummer - it's only a matter of getting to know how it works. And I haven't looked at all at the Rhythm Generator yet.

Cheers.

The Rhythm Generator is incredible, but bear in mind that it tends to create Rhythms that follow the factory scheme of only one loop for the BEATS loopboxes and several loops for the BREAKS loopboxes (which is how most genres are performed), but if you like impro/random sounding stuff have a look at:
Rhythm Editor> Edit> Import/Export> Loops> Load Multiple loops. With this you can (for example) populate your BEATS loopboxes with BREAKS loops. Your source is chosen in the directory (say Breaks/ Funk), then destination loop type (say Beats) is selected at the bottom. You end up with lots of loops in each BEAT loopbox. Then with random loops enabled you'll get a nice continuously varying performance...great to jam with.
