Despite what I've said earlier in this thread I'd say go for it....if for nothing else an afternoon's entertainment. Can't go to a movie for $13 anymore........
I think I got them all for nothing in various promotions, but I suppose if you like that mid 90's " vibe in your recordings, its a pretty good deal.

I bought my h/w Bass Station Rack in '94 for £350 ... it got a lot of use for the next 10 years, then I bought an X-Station :ud: :help:

Might fire up my V-Station and take a trip down memory lane later. :hihi:

I quickly tired of it and everything since sounded like a weak facsimile of the Nova family which looking back from these days was really not that nice a sound...personal opinion only
I find the Ultranova very weak and bland sounding. It sounds like they completely amputated the little character there was in the former Nova synths, and made it conform to the current ideal of clean, posh, and character-less synths. I must say i quite like the sound of the older Nova's though. Surely not the best sounding synths ever, but, by far not the worst either, IMO.
My band uses an Ultranova live. I agree - there's nothing special about the sound. However, it's an extremely versatile, reliable synth for a small stage setup, and that's where it excels (and probably why it's still selling). There's always a market for that. I always feel like Novation is competing in a different space, sacrificing some innovation for practicality and price.

We use a lot of "traditional" keyboard sounds (wurli, b3, mellotron) as well as synth (especially moog / monosynth). I can come close enough reproducing all those sounds live thanks to the 'nova's versatile oscs and generous mod routing (velocity -> distortion for wurli? check!).

Ideally we'd use a Nord Stage and Sub37 (got one but it's more of a beast than it first appears). But we'll be keeping the Ultranova for smaller gigs, and for bands like us it's perfect.

Here it's doing Moog and Mellotron (1:40 and 2:40) duties. Shitty phone recording but you get the idea.

Back on topic..V-Station probably doesn’t sound much like the UN and MN but still has a place given it’s unique digital hardware origins and the convenience of the gui imo.

I just dug out my copy, re-installed and authorized it, updated it, and it works - even as a 64 bit vst3 now.
Still looks and sounds the same, I think. Nothing really special, but definitely usable.

Yep. Only difference is that now, the voice display won't work, the LED's for the LFO rate won't work, aaaand... i'm sure something else didn't work too. :)

They fixed the bipolar controls working like shit, at least.

I got the V-Station plugin but have not used it for a while. It's also quite different to the UltaNova both sound and feature wise and IMO not a replacement for the UlraNova at all.

For me the UltraNova is one of the best hardware synths i owned and played so far (got it since 3 years now...). While i currently need some money and want to sell some of my hardware i'll try to keep my UltraNova as long as possible. As it's quite cheap even when bought new i would not earn much money with it anyway. Currently Thomann (and some other shops too) is selling it new for 411 € now.

Don't you wish that *all* software was supported this long and well? For $13, I consider this a no-brainer.
LOL! :)

They still don't had fixed the bugs which appeared when switching to 64-bit:

- Voices + MIDI LED don't work anymore
- the arp is out of host sync!!!
- if you load a project with the V-Station it takes 1-2 seconds until the patch is loaded

Also the sine wave is full of noise... in most cases cases you have a short "click" at the beginning of each patch which only can be solved with huge attack.

Nope
live 11 / Arturia collection / many Softube plug ins / thats it

I still have it, and use it from time to time.

Was the 1st synth I bought tbh, and learnt a lot on it. It's simple and can sound lush.

V-station urgently needs a modern GUI update. The current one is rubbish.

Honestly it could do with new features such as new effects, sequencers, envelopes and modulators. They should do it like Access did with the Virus TI line; steadily add bucketloads of new features whilst maintaining the same basic sound.

It’s still a useful synth especially for making 90’s sounding dance tracks. It’s got a nice vintage VA sound similar to the Virus B and JP8K mixed in with some of the Novation family sound.

Regarding the sound, how similar do you think those are to each other? I watched a couple of videos where they were compared, and wrote a lot of opinions about it. Some say they're almost indistinguishable from each other, others claim the K-Station sounds much better.

As far as i know, they're supposed to sound the same, and are even patch compatible.

Post

they do not sound the same to me. K is much warmer, and objectively sounds much better, felt especially with regards to cutoff-resonance-overdrive-fm working together.

but again, both are, to me, great and usable. i prefer the v for some things and the k for others.

tbh, i'm old by now lol. can't be bothered by being anal about K vs V stuff :) If i feel like grabbing one or the other i'll just do it :)

OK, thanks for the heads up. :) A bit disappointed, TBH, as i thought they're more or less the same. Strange that they didn't port the algorithms one to one to the software version, i thought it was merely a matter of different programming languages (C++ for software, and C or assembler for the hardware).
