Work around for no Midi Clock output?

Okay, I love Tracktion and been using it for over a year now waiting patiently for T2. Since there is no news about T2s feature list I'm still not sure if we will be able to sync external gear. I really want to use my mighty Korg Z1 without having to play it real time and record the audio. Too much timing and slicing to do later, plus I'd really like to make use of the awesome arpeggiator on this beast. Well I don't want to abandon Tracktion so please give me the work around. Is there a plug or rewire host that I can use that will transmit through/around/instead of Tracktion? Help!!

Sielsynth,

Are you saying you can't send MIDI data from Tracktion through a MIDI interface to outboard gear?

I didn't know this was an issue, though I haven't had to try it either. My midi keyboard is so old I don't want to use any of the sounds from it. It's an old Ensoniq VFX SD from the era:

"not old enough to be vintage - not new enough to sound like the future"

So it gets relegated to input device only.

Please clarify. Have you simply not turned on your MIDI out device? Do you have one listed in your settings tab?

Tracktion can not at the present time send a midi clock, therefore you can not sync external devices to the sequencer.

Am I missing something? Im recording and syncing with filters, arpegiator, and the whole shebang!

Did you set up your synth for external midi clock sync? Usualy in the menu under global; Midi.

I guess I'm the one missing something! :-o

I could've sworn I asked this question some time ago and was told Tracktion didn't send MTC. Anyway, it works good enough for me.

@sleepwalker
Thanks for making me take another look. :hihi:

so how do you sync it up? can you sequence a rack synth with tracktion or just sync up an external sequencer?

Post

Yes, you can sync up an external synth. I have my Korg Z1 synced to Tracktion. Just assign the midi track that you've created to the default midi out and away you go. Tracktion will also send midi cc info so if you don't want any program changes makes sure to turn that off.

What I don't think Tracktion can do(and somebody correct me if I'm wrong) is sync sequencers. I don't think it can send the time code needed tio get multiple sequencers to start up at the same time.

Well I have an ASR10 and I want to sync it up so they both start at the same time and I could record off of it. But I suppose I could use the ASR 10 like a module and record from it as I would a rack synth, right?

The word "sync" seems to be causing some confusion (for me at least!). "Sync" means "match the tempos of two devices".

If you play notes on a synth by sending MIDI data to it, you are "controlling" or "playing" that synth, not syncing it--even if the note timing is controlled by Tracktion's internal clock.

However, if you set an LFO rate to match the tempo of another device, you have synced the LFO to that device.

You can play external synths from Tracktion.
You can't sync external sequencers or LFOs to Tracktion's internal clock, because Tracktion doesn't send MTC or other time code.

Sleepwalker, how are you "synced" up? AFAIK, it's impossible to actually sync arpeggiators or anything else to Tracktion right now.

This is my understanding also. sorry for the poor choice of words.

The midi playback is controlled by Tracktion. Tracktion cannot send MTC as I thought and mentioned earlier. MTC stands for "midi time code" you need this to sync external sequencers or devices(like arpeggiators). If you want to use your synth like a module or basically the same way you use a VST this is possible, Tracktion simply sends midi note information controlled by Tracktions' internal clock.

This is the only feature that I am patiently waiting for in T2 (at least, I hope it has it). Syncing external devices to Tracktion will fully complete my hardware/software needs. I still use a ton of MIDI sequencers, and would really love to be able to compose on-the-fly with them, as well as have them fully synced up to Tracktion for recording / playing purposes. If there is a current solution (i.e. a VST that generates MIDI clock) I would pay money for it, like NOW!!!!

Thanks,
Peter

How can a program that is supposed to be a midi sequencer (among other things) not send midi clock?
A serious flaw... Can't change from cubase to tracktion yet.

Post

Because it's an audio sequencer first.

It's in keeping with the original vision of the program, but I imagine this "flaw" will be fixed with T2 if/when that ever appears.

Thats too bad for you man. I made the switch a long time ago and would never go back.

But yeah like Lunch Money mentioned, Tracktion was focused on audio first. I think someone even sayd Jules original T version didnt even have midi :o .
