Mind your ears if this corker effects you!

Beta 9.3.4 64bit Windows.

If I open any project edit (my own, my own stripped of 3rd party plugs, the demo tracks, any really) and then close it and choose 'Discard' rather than save, my speakers output an unholy racket of internal buffer errors (there is some semblance of the tracks elements being somewhat recognisable) then 9 times out of 10, POOF! Waveform gone. (Which I'm getting used to)

I'm glad you mentioned this as I've been experiencing something similar (I think) though the frequency of it happening for me is the inverse, about 10% chance.

I'll go to close an edit and for me, it doesn't matter if I select save or or discard. The edit closes and then, and I know that this is what it's doing, W9 renders the preview of the edit which you find on the project list for that song. It renders is as fast as possible rather an normal playback speed however it's routing the render out through my audio output which results in hearing screeches and squeals since its does the render as fast as possible.

After it renders the preview audio, w9 will crash-to-desktop.It does seem more probable to occur when I'm using external plugins as opposed to the W9 internal ones. The only external plugins I use are Tracktion Collective, Biotek2 and also Renoise Redux.

I've had this happen with almost every version of W9 and not just the latest - I just keep forgetting to mention it as it's not a showstopper although the screeches are awful to hear.

Cheers,
G.

That explains it! I'd completely forgotten about the preview and never thought of that. Well done man. I'm always afraid something's 'just me'.

This is happening to me to. I'd say about 10% of the time. Sounds like a terrible remix of what I was working on but strangely I am drawn to it and want to record it. W9.3.2 Win10-64.

Out of curiosity, are you using Focusrite interfaces, by any chance?

In settings, under General Behaviour, turn off "Generate edit previews", and see if this stops happening.
I used to get this, turned that off, don't get it any more.

I'd really like to sort this one out but I've never been able to replicate it. It shouldn't be possible to render an Edit whilst it's still attached to the audio device.

Does this happen on all OSes? I primarily use macOS.

I am indeed. Is it a thing with them?

I turned off previews as soon as gavindi clued me up on them being the problem.

I don't know, but i've got a focusrite interface, and it did it with that, and when i've asked people in the past, they've had focusrite interfaces too. So I'm wondering if it is a quirk with those interfaces, or not. It'd be interesting if someone said they get it, but they don't use a focusrite interface.

I just switched to WDM and my onboard audio. Still happens.

Happened first time to me yesterday. Not using Focusrite, but am using Win 10. Just as described: discarding an edit, screen freezes with a buzzing screech, and then crash to desktop.
Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and even Deezer, whatever the hell Deezer is.
