Feature Request - Skip the MS C++ Libary Install

Those of us who are beta testers are subject to frequent updates to the library. Every time we must suffer the delay while the C++ stuff gets installed - it's a little scary to hit Cancel after this process has already begun. 99.99% of the time, the C++ stuff is the same as the last time. Could the install program detect that the currently installed library is the right one and skip the MS C++ install? Or could we get a dialog box asking us to either proceed with the C++ install or skip it?

Post

Actually, yeah, that's caught me out before. I think i accidentally pressed enter during install (or escape) and it totally borked my C++ stuff, took a while to get things working correctly again.

Ah. They only thing related to MS C++ I see on Linux installs is at the very end of the install where it briefly shows at popup screen. Otherwise pretty snappy installs, focused on Melda plugins.

I'm afraid not, this is purely microsoft stuff, which is just needed. What is the problem anyways? It takes just a few seconds.

It takes about 30 seconds here each time.

You mean, on Windows you have to install every time something that's not related to the Melda plugins before installing the plugins ?

No definitely not. It has to be installed one time only, if the right version isn't already installed. There are several installers from other companies showing this behavior. They check if it is installed or not and thus can skip it. It probably is just a flag in the commandline.
It runs on my machine! Everything else is undefined behavior.

I have never bothered to time it, but it is a noticeable and annoying amount of time.

Hmmm, I'll check if it could be faster. I believe the MS installer checks if it is already installed, but not sure why it is taking so much time on your computers.

Last install (yesterday) I timed it and it took approx. 85 seconds on my machine (five-year old I7 with conventional drives, not SSDs). Not the end of the world, but it would be nice to skip this step if not needed, and 99%+ of the time it's definitely not needed.

I've been getting a forced install of the library with each new revision of the plug-in package, so unless Microsoft have been updating their libraries that quickly, the forced reinstall is unnecessary.

Maybe they have, in which case it's not. Is there maybe a switch that tells the C++ installer to check for previously installed versions?

I've installed old software packages that installed similarly antique versions of the MSVCRT that I'm sure I already had, and wondered if there was some way to avoid that shenanigans.

Post

And so I'm lucky on Linux to not have to deal with any of that at all. At least so far.

When it requires a version update of the MS stuff, is it because the installer is actually using very new methods and functions only found in the newest version of that MS thing or, is it just a 'stupid' version number comparison and would run just fine without the update if nothing was insisting on those numbers to be the same ?

Same here (on a SSD, btw), hehe. :D
System: Win 10 64 bit / i9 9900K (8x 3.6 GHz) / 16 GB DDR4-3200 RAM / 1TB M.2 SSD + 2x 500 GB SSD / RME Babyface / Reaper
