Recording using external hardward

I am using the Alesis Sampled Pad 4, which has MIDI capabilities via USB to Midi cable, and Tracktion 6 and Windows 10.

Not sure if this is possible:

I am trying to configure the Sample Pad to Tracktion, so that when I hit a pad on the Sample Pad, Tracktion will record the sound as it is on the Sample Pad, e.g. If I have an snare on pad1, tracktion will playback/record the snare when struck on the SP4.

I have followed:

viewtopic.php?t=443076

Since it is similarly relevant but have been unable to successfully resolve this. The user in the above forum mentions: "it talks about sending output to a Korg synth and then feeding the Korg generated audio back into Tracktion. I don't want to do this".
This is exactly what I want to do ^^^.

When I try to translate the midi data back into another track as per the youtube video above, (1:24) there is no option available as shown in the video,

I am wondering if I am doing something wrong, if the Sample Pad isn't compatible, or if I should just record it using the 1/4 inch Jacks and an Audio interface.

Fairly new to this so apologies in advance.

Thanks!

Look at tutorials for recording audio, then, not MIDI. You'll need to route the audio of your SamplePad to your soundcard.

It looks like you will need to do at least two things here:

1. Route the audio out of the SamplePad to your soundcard to record audio sample clips onto a track in Tracktion.
2. Use a sampler plugin in Tracktion to play back the newly recorded audio samples that you wish to trigger via MIDI over USB from the SamplePad.
Windows 10 and too many plugins

Zzz00m is correct, and the manual--while correct--doesn't address doing both MIDI and audio simultaneously, and I think that can get confusing.

Ensure your SamplePad is sending and receiving MIDI to one track, if that's what you want to do. Ensure the "input" for that track is the SamplePad, and the output is either to the SamplePad (via the Properties pane, at the bottom of the screen). That way you can both play the SamplePad or have the piano roll play it for you.

Then, make sure the audio outputs of the SamplePad are going into your computer somehow: either audio over USB converter, or plugged directly in, or however you want to do it.

Finally, on a new track, select the audio input as your track's input and ARM THE TRACK (click the red dot on the input). When you hit "record," T6 should be recording the audio coming off the SamplePad, whether you're triggering it or you're using MIDI to do so.

So depending on how you want to control it, you kind of need both the directions for MIDI as well as live audio record.

I hope this helps!
