First off, hello fellow mu-era, second: Anyone know if it’s possible to do volume ducking on grouped racks. So for instance, i have a kick/rack and i have 5 other rack/tracks, i want to do volume automation (ducking) on the other group of racks not the kick track, without using a sidechain compressor.

Try the plugin "kickstart": https://www.kickstart-plugin.com/

It´s affordable yet effective

Without a plugin. The problem with a plugin is i get the pumping effect. I don’t want that, trying to bring up the clarity of the drums in the mix by ducking out the volume of everything else when the kick hits.

There are a few possibilities:

1) Use an envelope follower module, which triggers an envelope to reduce the volume of an amplifier. Like this:

2) Attached a MUX that does the ducking with notes, like your kick notes.

So, in a project context:
Image
Note that the outputs of Rack 2 and Rack 3 have been fed into the ducker inputs, with Rack 3 controlling the ducking and Rack 2 getting ducked. Rack 3 feeds Master unaffected whilst the ducked output of Rack 2 feeds master.

The first option looks like maybe what i am wanting to achieve, is that something that is in the docs? If so, i won’t waste your time.

The second mux i can’t download (no access too) but i am guessing it is something similar to using the level compressor to sidechain right?

Thanks!

The ZIP downloaded here okay and the Mux inside loaded into MuLab okay, too.

Neither method uses compression.

The first method uses an audio signal on the second audio input to trigger an envelope, which controls the output gain applied to the first audio input, as shown in the image.

The second method uses a note input, rather than an audio input, to trigger an envelope, which controls the the output gain of the audio input, using a balancer.

You can read about MUX here: http://www.mutools.com/info/docs/mux/mux.html
