Is it possible to switch the 'instrument type' (not sure if that's the proper MDrummer term) on a track ? With congas for instance. I just discovered that there are 338 types of congas. Switching manually when a track is playing is quite nice - is it possible to automate this in some ways ?

That's not possible and won't be, sorry. I'd recommend using multiple instances.
