My computer has an internal SSD drive and to this point, I've put all my sample libraries on it. But SampleTank 4 Max, because of its size, will have to go onto my slower external HD. Additional time onto the slower drive? Should be an exercise anyway.
Why didn't you buy the edition with the usb drive included?

I have a laptop with two USB ports. This forces me to use hubs to connect all my gear to the computer. At the moment I have 2 external HDs, a midi keyboard, another midi device, an Apogee duet and a printer plugged in. The system is stable but it has not always been so. Adding another device does not seem prudent. Hence the decision to download SampleTank 4 max to one of my external HDs.

AFAIK it doesn't run from the USB, its just delivered on the USB, you copy it from the USB to your hard drive (its faster + you have a back up + its free!)
X32 Desk, i9 PC, S88MK3, S1, BWS, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6 Pro3, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone II, OP1-F, OPXY, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

I would get another internal drive if possible, even a standard SATA HDD would be better than a USB external drive for samples. The external drives are typically slower drives, but fine for backing up your samples.

I'm not sure how an external drive would affect the new sample streaming feature in ST4.

The sequential read disk benchmarks for my 3 drives are:
SSD - 282 MB/s (my system drive)
SATA HDD - 165 MB/s (my current sample drive)
USB3 - 106 MB/s (my backup drive)

The USB stick is to transport the sound libraries but they should be installed on another hard drive as it is not recommended to use the USB stick to house/run the library content.

How does miroslav philharmonik 2 compare to sample tank 4?

Post

Miroslav is intended to be a dedicated orchestral instrument.

SampleTank is a little bit of everything, including some orchestra instruments. Unless your specialty is orchestral work, you will probably find a much broader sound palette in SampleTank. If you already have Miroslav, you will be able to include that library in the ST4 interface for the best of both.

I intend to use both my Miroslav 2 CE and my Syntronik libraries with ST4.

Ah and there will also be compression so I'm not sure exactly what size will be used.

A quick question. I've paid for the download edition. Is there an extra charge to get it on a USB drive?

The size on the USB stick is what I was talking about (the installation files)

They are the same price (except for shipping for the physical USB version). If you contact IK Sales/Service via http://www.ikmultimedia.com/contact-support you may be able to change your order if you wish.
