I’m not surprised sales might not have been the greatest. They were practically giving them away at PB for one thing. A sure sign of being hard up for cash.
Despite all the drama and valid concerns that have developed, Thorn is an excellent synth.
No, it's not ground breaking in any way, but it is elegant and efficient and fun to use.

I was saying in the other thread that this roll out isnt so bad considering they are giving 3 sound packs as compensation for the $19, effectively. and then those with PA vouchers can get it for free. So it's not that bad really.

But the new PA price, yes. However that's on them. I would imagine that the sale price will be low from time to time so as per usual just wait. This might be a win-win-win for DS, PA and customers - DS sounds like he is having problems paying the attention that his products need. PA always wants new alliances. We want updates and inexpensive great sounding tools. Let's see what the sale prices on Thorn will be. It all might be worth it for further faster development. :phones:

what are the 3 sound packs and how do we get them? Thanks.

True story:

Years ago I owned a business. I got tired of doing it by myself. I put it up for sale with the goal of staying on to consult and keep helping the business grow, and would also keep a share of the profits for myself. The first thing the buyer asked for as we were about to sign the agreement to buy, was for my list of contacts. I eagerly handed them over to the buyer without contacting those on my list or even informing them of what was happening. Really it was none of their business. It was my business. Ultimately that is what the new owners were buying: my client list, and the little bit of additional talent I brought to the table. The new owners were already in the same business as me...they were just giving me an opportunity to shine in a way I could not as the sole proprietor. In the end, my clients got the same good service they had always gotten from me, but ended up with a superior product (which also cost them a little bit more). I don't remember anyone being upset about it. Most of my clients were just glad that I stayed on until the torch was fully passed many years later.

I really don't see the problem here.

Yeah I don't really get why people care about DS giving Plugin Alliance their info. I've sworn off buying their plugins and even I already had a PA account for some freebie I picked up forever ago.

What's got me upset is that they've basically voided my license as an upgrade path and replaced it with a coupon that expires in thirty days. Totally inexcusable.

Post

I don't believe they should of made the upgrade expire either.

With the take over of Thorn by PA it is not guaranteed that the old versions will receive any further updates. Perhaps anybody using Thorn has to buy a new PA version now... :scared:

EDIT:
BeeDog wrote: Fri Feb 08, 2019 11:29 am Posted in the other topic too: Just received a mail from PA that recognized me as a "Thorn v1" user. The code allows you to buy the PA version for $19.
Hey bro...

If you look further down their product page you will find a tab detailing “About DS Audio”. I don’t think it’s a take over as such, more like a partnership like the one with Unfiltered Audio, who still develop their own products, as with Elysia, Dear Audio, Lindell, and Felder, among others.

Brainworx do code for other manufacturers, but DS Audio most likely won’t be one of them.

I don’t have any inside information, but I’m sure the upgrade offer extends to anyone with a valid license. In the past I have PA to be quite fair and more than reasonable.

You can always email support if in doubt.

If you install the new version over the old version it's getting really messy, Logic will not recognise/validate the new version, it still sees the old version but puts that into demo mode. Now I have no Thorn whatsoever, I have manually removed the old AU component for Thorn and will see how I can validate the new version. Not so cool...

New location for User Presets/3rd party soundsets:

Mac:
Library (not user)/Application Support/DS Audio/DS Thorn/Plug-In Presets/

Windows:
C:\Users\[User Name] \Documents\DS Audio\DS Thorn\Plug-In Presets\

So all user of the AU version, first remove the old plugin component from
Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components

then install the new version using the PA installation manager, otherwise you'll get into trouble. The second installation on my main studio computer went smoothly, the first installation on my laptop was a mess.

Thanks for sorting that out, Simon :phones:
