layzer wrote: Mon Feb 11, 2019 2:32 pm oh, ok you are talking about my spec graph of YOUR song,
well still, Etienne1973's spec graph also shows the 3khz dip so maybe voxengo span is lying to you...lol
that however isnt as noticeable as the bass.
Well then if my Voxengo SPAN isn't accurate what am I supposed to do? What program do YOU use and can I get it in 64 bit because I know you use 32 bit OS?
seven phases spec analyzer,

yeah, its 64bit too, give it a spin...
https://sevenphases.wordpress.com/spectrum-analyzer/
But you still didn't answer my question. If the kick and bass both roll off sharply at 50, how do you hear the kick over the bass if they're both taking up the same frequency range?
come on wags... think... the kick has a sharp attack and different harmonics in the higher freq's. and has a narrower stereo image. if i want it more prominent, i can tune the kick higher into the 100hz+
So then I'm doing everything in reverse? I leave the kick around 60 and tune the bass up to around 80. Normally.

I don't know. That's how I saw some people do it. They drop off the low end of the bass while pumping up the low end of the kick. They then drop the kick frequency around 80 to make room for the bass at that frequency.

I can absolutely show you the videos using this method.

So they're wrong?

I mean I didn't learn this from a hole in the wall. I learned it from watching stuff over and over.

So then how do you know what advice you get is right and what advice you get is wrong?

Experts. Bah!

if it sounds good, it must be right... right?

i mean, if people are always commenting your mix sounds good
you must be doing something right.

Okay, I did a little test. I followed your instructions to the letter. However, SPAN shows info still coming in under 50 even though I have a high pass EQ with a 96 db slope just a tick under 50.

But is this acceptable?

thats fine.. you want a steep rolloff from 50hz and below...
you actually want a little bit of the subbass freq in there.
but getting a very sharp rolloff is hard to do with regular
EQ's I like to use spline EQs that can do very deep cuts.

at any rate, that bass example you are sharing shows there
IS frequencies present at around 50hz with a sharp rolloff,
which to me, sounds good. I'm sure most people would agree on that. :tu:

I use Fabfilter Pro Q2. It's supposed to be one of the better EQs but what do I know?

And you were able to hear the kick fine?

thats a good enough eq, whatever can do a deep cut.

and yeah, i hear the kick ok. like i said.. it sounds like a good
low end. :tu:

Well, it's not rocket science but if that's what people expect,

11th track from my upcoming CD "Untitled Masterpiece"

Basic rock jam on this one. Done primarily to test my bass mixing. Song is an obvious response to the bass issue. And I'll leave it at that.

Wanted to do a lot more with this but my DAW was having problems with something inside this project and eventually I had to resort to a backup version that was missing a few things. So I'm not entirely happy with this one on that front. Still, 36 tracks (a lot of vocal stuff), pushed this to the edge of my processing power.

No great piece of music but as rock jams go, it's okay.

Where's The Bass

I hear the clink of the piano
I hear the banging of the drums
I hear the whale of the guitar
Yeah that amp how it hums

But I've got just one question
Just one question
Here's my question

Where's the bass
Where's the bass
Where's the bass
Where's the bass

You gotta have that bottom
To carry the groove
Like salting up your dinner
Gotta make 'em move

So I've got just one question
Just one question
Here's my question

What kind of music is this inspired by? It sounds like Depeche Mode, will.i.am, and AC/DC combined, I don’t know how to explain it. Those instruments are very nice, like the synth power chords and some of the leads. By any chance do you use Dexed? Some of the sounds are familiar.
Many paid and free VSTs as well as Kontakt libraries. As well as HW synths/drum machine and acoustic instruments.

This was probably inspired by 50 plus years of listening to whatever was on the radio at the time, my first exposure being The Beatles on Ed Sullivan in 1964. So who knows where this came from? I honestly have no idea.

On this track is the following:

EZ Drummer
MODO Bass
Real LPC
VIR 2 Electri6ity Rickenbacker
Arturia Pigments
Diva
ABSynth 5
Session Horns Tenor Sax
Pianoteq 6
7 Vocal Tracks including 2 Vocaloid 4 tracks

And that's pretty much it. No FM synths were used on this one.

I might’ve mistook some of the Absynth stuff for FM. You’ve made some good patches anyways!

I honestly don't use FM a lot, if at all. I'm not a big FM synth fan. I do like Sytrus though and Arturia's DX 7 because it has so much more than the original DX 7.

Ok. That makes sense. I see you being successful producing music for people, maybe on an indie label.

You're too kind. I am not even remotely close to being good enough to produce music for anybody, but I'll take the compliment.

I enjoyed "Where's The Bass." Very amusing and catchy! (Although the instrumental section dragged on for a bit.)

I could imagine an animated video with cartoon characters being a viral hit with children.
