Mod wheels in Ableton

I like to use Ableton's XY pad for real time parameter control in Ableton using a mouse. Unlike other synths, I discovered that Hive's virtual mod wheel is not mappable in Ableton, while other controls are. I was wondering why? I also wish Diva had a mod wheel control that is similarly mappable. This is a handy feature when working without a keyboard controller or with one without a mod wheel.

I use this M4L device to automate pitch wheel, modwheel and other MIDI controls in Live.

Unfortunately, I only have Ableton Standard and don't have Max for Live.

You can always do this from MIDI editor, tho...

I am still kind of perplexed as to why the virtual mod wheel and pitch bend wheel in Hive do not generate MIDI control messages in Ableton so that they can be assigned to the XY control in Ableton like other parameters can. And in the case of Diva, there are no virtual pitch bend or mod wheel controllers that can be assigned. I am using a Novation mini keyboard with my notebook computer that does not have pitch bend or mod wheels so that is why I would like to have this functionality.

I also have the Novation Mini, as an on-the-go controller. I remapped CC 21-22 to CC 1, 2, and 11 so that I could use the first three knobs as Mod, Breath, and Expression.

I'm on Mac, and use MidiFire for this, with the Stream Byter module, with this simple script:

Code: Select all

# Map CC 21-23 to CC 01, 02, and 11
B0 15 = B0 01
B0 16 = B0 02
B0 17 = B0 11
FYI — My main keyboard is a DX7. I have another MidiFire session which remaps the velocity curve to get full velocity range by rescaling 0-100 to 0-127. MidiFire is a very useful tool.

If you're looking for a tool on Windows to remap MIDI CC's, BOME MIDI Translator can easily do that and a whole lot more. Great application.

I swear, if someone made a standalone modwheel with USB MIDI in a small form-factor, I'd totally buy it. Sometimes the Roland style modwheel on my primary controller just isn't the same. Would be nice to have a standard modwheel off to the side.

I have seen a lot of interest in that type of controller as well. I am surprised no one has made it!

I am looking seriously at Blue Cat Remote Control. It seems to do a lot of things with MIDI data and may fit the bill for my application: https://www.bluecataudio.com/Products/P ... teControl/
