Using submixes causes freezing and sidechaining to crash

In some projects with lots of submixes, trying to sidechain from another track or trying to freeze either individual tracks or using the "freeze edit to lower CPU" option causes crashes every time. Does anybody know what's going on here? As with the title, I think it's due to submixes, but I can't be sure.
