Have you seen the Dan Worrall "Introduction to Ace" videos? As per his usual, he does a great job covering the features in an easy to understand way.Ploki wrote: Tue Feb 26, 2019 12:17 pm My first bought u-he synth was ACE, and the first that caught my eye, but ironically i now know it the least...![]()
I really dig ACE when I use it, for whatever reason, I just don't use it anywhere near as much as I should considering how much I like the sound of it. It's probably the patch cables. I'll be honest, and I know it's not the "cool" thing to admit in these days of Eurorack and inspired plugins, but that workflow does put me off a bit. I much prefer things like the Mod Matrix in Hive, or Zebra's cable-less approach, or the Massive style modulations in the Plugmon skins. Following those cables around the screen and trying to suss out what they're doing just takes me too long. Then again, ACE is a great sounding synth before you even patch anything in.

I've always thought of ACE as 'Bazille lite.' This probably isn't correct though.
Would you say ACE has it's own sound? It has it's own workflow and different outcomes of course. Though, does it sound unique among the other U-he synths?

Yeah it does sound unique. It's not Bazille lite, unless you go by number of modules. They do very different things. Bazille is FM/PM/PD powerhouse, consider it as a digital semi-modular, whereas ACE is your regular analog-inspired semi-modular.

I found this from the manual, and I think it can help frame ACE:lunardigs wrote: Tue Feb 26, 2019 11:51 pm I've always thought of ACE as 'Bazille lite.' This probably isn't correct though.

Playing with it right now, I definitely have to make a point of using it more. Sound-wise, it's kind of like a brighter, tighter, punchier Diva. Very analog and warm but can be startlingly fast with some crazy modulations. There's some great modular bleep and bloop sequences from Howard that just pop out of the speakers and have this amazing transient response. At other times, you get into this heavy Roland/techno territory then the next patch might be a great bell or tine sounding patch with cool FM modulations happening, or some crazy super sync sound. It can be sweet sounding, but also be very nasty and aggressive too. In that regard, it's closer to the RePro's than Diva even.If you really want to compare ACE to a classic modular synth (or three), think of it as a
pimped-up ARP 2600 using modules from a Roland SH-7 with (almost) the patching
flexibility of an EMS VCS3 / Synthi A – but polyphonic. Just like the ARP 2600, ACE is
pre-patched so that it will work out-of-the-box, but these default connections can be
overridden by plugging in patch cables.

I really like automating parameters in Abletons clip mode while using an ACE patch, it makes the sound morph very nicely into almost a completely different sound. The controls are all logically setup so it makes it easy to know how it's going to sound.

I'm still holding hope for an updated filter in ACE @Urs
Not that there's anything wrong with the current one but I would love to have one of the same quality as Bazille's which I find a bit more analog sounding.

This year we'll only release a version with the new browser and a finalized parameter order on WIndows (which then equals the parameter IDs on Mac).FastTriggerFish wrote: Wed Feb 27, 2019 10:01 am I'm still holding hope for an updated filter in ACE @Urs

I would love to do more, but our focus needs to remain on Hive 2.0 and Zebra 3 for the coming months.

ACE is the synth I picked up because it was the cheapest UHe synth. I think it is my favorite bass machine for me. I do make samples from it and a arp put it into a sampler quite a bit to get a very sit in the mix sound. I usually am redoing songs and if I am making music in a computer I refuse to just try and replace a bass guitar or drums. ACE just is great to get a very musical bass guitar replacement for me.

Bitwig is my DAWs and UHe and Tracktion Synths are my Bae. I maybe buy one synth a year. REMEMBER SELF just one synth a year!

If you ever add another filter model to ACE, please don't replace the existing one. I just love the filter for those old school Roland like acid sounds.
Here is an ACE sequence which used both filters in a weird configuration with feedback and a few other neat tricks for a nice acid vibe:
