Alternative to Cubase 9?

Studio One is similar to Cubase, but I slightly prefer Cubase. On the Mac there is of course Logic, but I assume you are on PC?

Ableton Live, Bitwig as well as FL Studio offer quite specific user interfaces and workflows that differ a bit from the classical DAW approach. They are definitely well suited for what you want to do. Just check whether you click with their particular concepts.

I would not recommend Reaper since it feels like a dysfunctional DAW to someone who is used to the conciseness of Cubase.

I also started on Cubase and eventually tried other DAWs, but I keep coming back to Cubase (Artist version is sufficient for my needs) because overall it offers the best user experience with a clearly laid out interface and all essential functions readily accessible.

Yeah. I can agree with this. I am just looking at other DAW's these days because they "seem" cooler. Also, as my kid has gotten into making music, I am looking at the various videos of the guys he likes and how they use DAWs and their workflow is a 180 degree different from how old guys (like me??) that were weened on tape and early MIDI use DAWs and that work flow. I really like the approach of the new generation. They are really actually utilizing the power and flexibility of the new tools and software compared to what I am doing, which seems to me, i am just replicating a workflow i am accustomed to, on a computer. Below is a screen show of one of those guys.

I left cubase for S1 years ago,... more intuitative IMHO, never looked back

Lots of probs with both cubase, halion, and steinberg, back then;... basicly a sick culture I guess, and quite some key-brains left them as you might remember

Its my impression Yamaha has changed the culture, and products, for the better,..

I might consider Halion again now that IK made an fool out of themself with ST4 :-)

But S1 will stay

Completely unhelpful linux console text editor analogy:
Cubase = Vim
Studio One = Nano
Reaper = Emacs

I moved to StudioOne 6 months ago instead of upgrading to Cubase 10.

The maybe nicest thing, apart from feeling so light on system, is that have an import feature for Cubase projects. I do the Export Selected Tracks to xml file that can be read as is to StudioOne.

Markers(single track), Tempo track, audio tracks and instrument tracks with midi. Not plugins or automation and stuff, but I feel it's really good start and quick to move over. Not even OMF or AAF support as much, I think, not regarding midi anyway.

If anything, this thread motivates me to install Cubase Artist 9 again... :D

Workflow also greatly depends on what you're doing and what type of music you're doing. There was a clip/scene oriented sequencer as far back as the Atari ST. I'm generally linear, but that's also a product of the music being linear in time and organized linearly. The approach may seem different, but it's really nothing more than taking a modular approach to construction resulting in a linear product. It literally takes an hour or two to get used to. The tools are great though!

BTW, S1's little icons and overloaded menus are not a plus for me. The whole interface is just really busy.

this thread makes me want to try bitwig again. i remember when they first came out, so much hoopla and so many problems. i guess they sort of cleaned up the product and made it more stable.

I still think the DAW market is over saturated. NI should just make their own DAW (or extend the functionality of Maschine) to tie in better with their ecosystem and just be done with it.

Actually just installed Artist 9. Uninstalled it again after 10 minutes. :D I really prefer Studio One now. Less bloat, less clicks, less windows. I really feel more comfortable with it now. It starts up in 1/4 the time Cubase does as well.

I know people will bash my head in for this, but, what i subjectively noticed once again is that Cubase somehow sounds different/better to other hosts. Yes, i know. Nonetheless i ALWAYS have that impression when i use it. Weird.

I have a very streamlined workflow with Cubendo. So Studio One is more dock-oriented. Cubase adopted the docking thing, I don't use it and I hate when it rears its head with a false key command, making me learn how to make it go away. I mostly would rather use a key command as opposed to a click, so I do that. :shrug:

I also install a bare minimum of content, it starts up quickly per se, and my plugins reside 98% in VE Pro so even a project starts up quickly.

Fair enough. We all tick differently. :)

It's probably too late for that, If you haven't registered Cubase, but are you aware of Steinberg Zero Downtime program? https://helpcenter.steinberg.de/hc/en-u ... o-Downtime
