Hi.
I read an old post from Urs that NRPN support is on the list of coming fixes for the whole U-he software series. Is this still the case or has it been dropped?

Wow, that must've been old... We added multichannel MIDI learn instead, available in all current versions.

Yes it was a couple of years old =) Thanks for replying. I have some followup questions:
Dave Smith and Moog synths seem to support NRPN for sending high resolution data. Is there any way to get this high resolution data to control a U-He synth?
Does "multi channel MIDI learn" increase the resolution or does it only add more MIDI CCs?
And regarding NRPN in general, is it the de facto standard for high resolution MIDI?

There's also 14-bit CCs (using CCs 0-31 as MSB and CCs 32-64 as LSB). This is easier on the MIDI bandwidth as 2 CC messages are sent instead of 4 which is what usually happens with 14-bit NRPNs.
Multi-channel MIDI learn simply allows you using more CCs to control more parameters. You're not limited to 128 CCs, you have 128*16 CCs available. Well, less if you use 14-bit CCs, but still a decent number.

14-bit CCs.

Why would you do that instead of just sending 14-bit CCs? If your MIDI controller can be programmed to send NRPNs, then it most definitely can do 14-bit CCs natively, too (say, Behringer BCR2000, or a Novation Remote SL...)

Because when I set my Pro 2 to send CC's it wont send anything at all for many of the knobs (probably it uses single channel CC and there's not enough CCs). This means that when I set Local Control to OFF those knobs wont work at all to control the sound of the synth itself or any software instrument. If I instead set the Pro 2 to send NRPNs all knobs send data and I can edit the sound of the Pro 2 and automate it but some software instruments won't understand the data at all.
So my workflow using the Pro 2 to control both itself and software synths means I need to jump back and forth into the Global Settings and change between CC and NRPN and also be limited to use just a few knobs when controlling software instruments.

kda : midiConverter3 by insertpizhere can convert NRPN to CC 14bits (amongst many other things).
You'll find it here : http://www.thepiz.org/plugins/?p=pizmidi,
it's included with a ton of other very useful midi oriented vst.

Thanks a lot. Lot's of goodies there but I haven't gotten the translation to work yet but I'll try some more.RedChameau wrote:kda : midiConverter3 by insertpizhere can convert NRPN to CC 14bits (amongst many other things).

Is there a reason that NRPN is so scarcely implemented in the software instrument world but seems to be supported by a lot of hardware synths?Urs wrote:Wow, that must've been old... We added multichannel MIDI learn instead, available in all current versions.
And is there any chance it will ever be implemented in the U-He software?

I guess that's because there's already parameter automation, i.e. host software can fully control many (if not all) plug-in parameters with 32-bit floating point resolution.kda wrote:Is there a reason that NRPN is so scarcely implemented in the software instrument world but seems to be supported by a lot of hardware synths?
It isn't very likely. It's mentioned in one out of 637 tasks which are currently open at u-heAnd is there any chance it will ever be implemented in the U-He software?
My stance is, the best solution would be a tool that converts NRPN to one of the more commonly supported signal types (automation, MIDI CC). This will give you a wider support instantly.

Piz has it covered with midiNRPNConverter provided your host can load VST midi plugns.Urs wrote:My stance is, the best solution would be a tool that converts NRPN to one of the more commonly supported signal types (automation, MIDI CC). This will give you a wider support instantly.
Feel free to call me Brian.

Do you know what happened to that website? Seems to be down.
