Hi,

I’m looking for an alternative to the Waves Vocal Rider. I’ve had a quick look and found products by Melda M-AutoVolume and Hornet Autogain PromkII.

Are there any other options I’ve missed?

What would you recommend for best quality of results?

Thanks

TBPro Audio Gainrider 2 https://www.tb-software.com/TBProAudio/gainrider2.html
WA Production Outlaw https://www.waproduction.com/plugins/view/outlaw

Sorry, can't comment on the quality, don't use any of these. The only "auto gain" plugs I use from time to time is Hornet Normalizer and Hornet VU Meter MK3.

I think HoRNeT have some auto-gain plug-ins.
This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

TBProAudio DynaRide. Even though i designed the look of this plugin, but i won't write it here if i don't think it was worth to check.

Unlike Vocal Rider, Outlaw doesn't have sidechain (so you can't have the vocal level automatically adjust relative to other tracks) and its gate only filters out soft sounds (as opposed to voice vs breath or other non-singing noise). However its gain riding is good and it's on sale for $8. Was considering it but think I'll pass, since I already have Vocal Rider.

Melda and Hornet both have plugs similar to Vocal Rider...

Vocal Rider has the really big advantage of writing the automation data.

Our AutoGain, AutoGain Pro and AutoGain Pro MK2 write automation too... ;D

That's great! I was refering to the melda one in my mind that definitely isn't able to do that :)

Are you discounting Vocal Rider altogether? Used it but don't like it?
It's usually on sale for $29. Great plug in. use it on most tracks.
I wonder what happens if I press this button...

You sure? There are plenty discussions in the melda forum why this feature has been removed...

You can write automation with Melda MAutoVolume, but as the automation accuracy is not fast enough you are much better off spending time setting the parameters properly and than just let MAutoVolume do it's "magic".(I get great results with MAutoVolume, but usually it takes a bit of time to set it up properly: for example I play around with it's filters etc, to limit the input signal to the frequency range that's most characteristic of the sound.)
I guess the original design philosophy behind MAutoVolume is that it should replace the need for automation. Also MAutoVolume is not only intended to be used on vocals but on all kinds of other source signals, so compared to Waves Vocal Rider MAutoVolume is a way more versatile (and complex) tool which can be a huge advantage or a huge disadvantage depending what is it that someone is looking for. If someone only needs a tool to "ride vocals" than I think the waves vocal rider is the better option (as it's simpler to use), but ifsomeone needs something to be used on all kinds of source signals than I think MAutoVolume is the better tool.
There is a topic in the Melda forum section called "Writing automation with Mautovolume?":
