Given to the initial costs I wouldn´t blame Synapse Audio for not giving away everything for free...

If I charge 4 times more at the beginning it´s easy to be "generous" afterwards... but it´s nice to see how many people are highly pleased getting a little bit for free for their initial investment

Unfortunately, that completely ignores how much work and cost it is to create 70 GB of samples. Comparing Dune to Omnisphere is apples and orange really.

And Omni 2 includes alot of sampled content not from synths but from various instruments.

Oh 2.6 would be dune 5 now lol.

Love you spectrasonics. All people asking its price dont know the package it offers. All the free updates would be paid new versions with many other companies.

I remember when Omni 2 came out, lots of people complained about the upgrade price. And I remember making the point then that not only was is perfectly fair on its own, thaf Spectrasonics has a track record of many significant updates, all for free. And so the trend has continued. Each time I go through a new big update, I find myself saying “ok, this is is. Absolutely not buying any more new synths, it’s all right here”. I somehow never listen to myself, but maybe I’m learning.

I’ve always liked their model - no sales ever, but years of free big add ons and great support. Obviously none of us know, but I’d bet that each time a free update is released, they add another large trawl of brand new customers enticed by the new sugary goodness. The net effect is the same as having a sale without ever having one, these surges of new customers which pays for the development.

All the supposed no-brainier bargains that end up gathering virtual dust on our hard drives from companies who launch with splash but then turn it into abandonware, are eventually seen for what they are. People like this alternate model, the only surprise is that so few others follow it.

Omnisphere is great, but I find myself asking why they dont overhaul their UI. Its dated, and frankly sort of an eyesore compared to other synths. This is just my opinion. I feel that they constrict themselves to a UI that limits future features that could potentially be implemented. If that makes any sense.....

I like U-He because users can create their own UI. Plugmon for instance provides excellent skins that change the UI to make features much more accessible. If Omnisphere would offer some sort of "Block Modular" system in their UI, where you could drag and drop, pick and choose how to build your synth, it would really improve the workflow, and ability to edit parameters. Not only that, all of their hardware profiles could have their own respective blocks with their own macro's set to the respective hardware profile.

Omnisphere right now could learn from synths like UVI Falcon, and improve on that by making it simple, easy to build, and easy to understand.

Ofcoarse this is just my opinion, and many will disagree with me but thats ok. Some people are in love with their current UI, and dont have any issue with it.

Over time the UI has changed quite a bit, actually. It's only a small image, but this is what 1.0 looked like:

One of the defining traits of Spectrasonics is that they have a way of doing things. There's a uniformity about their products, the way the UIs work, and there's little to no customisation. I'm perfectly fine with that. You know where you are, the consistency helps. Indeed, my drive for a 3rd party app to batch tag is another facet of this, the moment you step outside their way of doing things - albeit sometimes oddly idiosyncratic - it becomes a mess.

Anyway, I think its very unlikely we'll see any drastic overhauls or skins. They've kept it looking fresh, but within their own house style.

Think 2.6 looks great compared to 1.0.

Like resizing it super huge, looks great on my screen and easy to manipulate.

Still struggling with the HW integration but it seems to work better in Live.

600 presets actually, looks like just over 100 are in the general library (mostly making use of the new ARP), and nearly 500 in the Hardware one.

The D50 stuff is nice, though the Soundtrack patch, a personal favourite of mine, is not 100% faithful to the original - it's fine at higher velocities, but at low velocities (under about 40 iirc) on the D50 the sound is very square wavey, and has a different quality than when you start to dig in harder - it's like a different flavour of Soundtrack, and is also used a fair bit on records of the time, and it's also a part of that patch that I really like. That sound is not there at low velocities on the OS version.

Still, no one is expecting Omnisphere for be a 100% faithful emulation of course, just thought it was worth noting... the D50 stuff in there is really nice, plus OS of course has additional capabilities to add another dimension to those patches. The hardware library is a really nice part of OS and the patches are cool, and different enough to the core OS patches that it really does reveal some different character to the synth.

Hopefully now that they've overhauled the arpeggiator, built out the hardware integration, doubled the amount of layers etc, and Omnisphere 2.6 is out - that it's mature enough and complete enough that they can move on from working so hard on it and focus their attention to other products...

In my opinion the D50 patches capture the spirit of the D50 but actually sound better than a D50!
