Yeah, that's not happening in most cases unless the device is fully class-compliant. NI doesn't do Linux.

I prefer a smaller keyboard (and am not a piano player), because of space constraints and use the KORG MicroKEY2 37 keyboard.
I like it a lot, the compact size, the 37 (mini) synth action keys, which have a good feel to them (and decent velocity sensitivity) and it also has a modwheel and pitchwheel which I really like.

I have a mini keyboard, a Novation LaunchKey Mini. The first A key is gone. An empty rectangle stands in its place, like someone missing a tooth. Will never get a mini keyboard again. The Axiom 25 still works though. The modwheel works but the octave key is starting to be though. Great 'little' keyboard that Axiom 25, and has after-touch which is great for many sound sets. I still use it, although I also use a Launchkey 49 since it allows for more keys and has a sustain pedal. Too bad it does not have after-touch. When I really want to play a keyboard all the way I have the M-Audio Pro88. Heavy beast with mechanical keys that needs some getting used to, but very solid, feels like an upright piano, really. Not much on the controller side though, no knobs, no sliders.
If I get any new keyboard I'll certainly be looking from the perspective of ruggedness and controller capabilities. I use Linux, all of these keyboards need no drivers.
