Wouldn't it be cooler though if the effects on/off states were mappable to hardware (midi learnable/automatable)?

Also too bad that controller doesn't have the velocity controls for the envelopes.

There are two small knobs at the bottom right labelled User 6 and 7 that you can use for that purpose.
