I guess I am more the 2-3 pages late this time...

I was going to weigh in earlier against loop recording since I haven't felt I needed it, and it worked poorly for me in Sonar 1-2. At one point, I even had a post composed detailing the failings of loop recording.

Then along came the RMIV group buy (and the price drop on DR008) and so now I'm thinking about adding a drum synth/sampler (apparently IL is thinking about it, too). Well guess what...loop recording would be a damn nice addition with a drum machine, especially since I am not capabale of playing an entire drum arrangement (or all of the components of a loop) in one take. It would be nice for the sequence to cycle while I added hits to the loop -- classic loop recording. I want it, or semblance of it.

This reminds me of another nice feature that most drum machines had in the 80's -- note erase during loop recording, where you held down a control key and tapped the drum trigger to erase notes. That would be a cool feature in software -- like an oops button for the rhythmically challenged.

If you buy the boxed version, can you later upgrade it to FL studio through download? if so how much? and would that upgrade download come with lifetime free updates?

hi secondskin. never too late :)

i remember those "hold down to erase" functions. on the emu drumulator and maybe the sequential circuits drumtracks i think ? they were certainly very good ergonomically for their time.

also funny that that sort of ergonomic function has not made it into the powerful abilities of software.

maybe there would be a button the software which you would click down and when down all midi data on the notes you are playing is erased.

there would probably be a danger of leaving "dangling" not-on and note-off messages, but "intelligent" software might be able to erase them ?

good idea though

If you own the boxed version you can download the first upgrade for free.

After that you can buy 'Lifetime free updates' for $29 and download all future updates for free.

Does this mean you will get everything we develop for free from now on ?

Not really : About 90% of the new stuff we do is built in to FL Studio as basic gear (for free) to make the application better and competitive with the rest of the software that's out there.

When we develop something new like a synth or other module we will investigate whether we will build this into the main app and include it in the next free update or whether we will sell it as an optional module.

Don't worry : There will be 100's of bugfixes, new features, synths, FX, ... for free with each update we release. Check out our history page to find out what has been 'given away' for free in the last 5 years.

I'm sorry I worded my post wrong. I meant to ask if I buy fruityloops edition of FL ($99version) can I upgrade that to FL studio? and will that upgrade include free updates?

I always remember the thrill when I saw the birth of pianoroll in FL 3.0. It was a free update to all of us existing users. That moment turned me into a diehard FL fanboy ever since.

Even though I understand the need for some kind of policy fine-tunning as time goes by, I still feel a bit sorry for the new users, since they have yet to enjoy such a warm present as we older users once had. Ah. those good old days...

That said, FL still definitely is a steal at its current pricing.

You have the free updates already, if you have the online version. The "producer edition" has extra features, like audio recording, full mixer and such. IMHO, the extra 50$ are worth it.

Yeah, I think I had it on an SCI Tom drum machine and maybe a Yamaha, too. Hard to remember. At one point I had soooo many drum machines...
