I'm back with another video and this time I'll show the wavetable capabilities of MSF. Not only the basic functions, but how to import and create your own. I hope you find it useful.

I'm having plenty of fun with wavetable (WT) in MSoundFactory. Originally I've started exploring WT in depth with very limitied Synths with respect to their wavetables capabilities. My goal was to reproduce a speach sample playback. Have done this with Zebralette, Thorn and Fathom, which only have 16 slots for each wavetable or only have "spectral" wavetables.

Anyway - From my Fathom Track for the KVR OneSynthChallenge (linked below) I have imported the sample of the word "cybernetic" in german pronounciation into MSoundFactory and it is quite fun to play with it.

Originaly the wavetable was created ike this:
1.) Use a text-2-speach processor balabola to get the original sample
2.) Use the import/resample function of Tone2 Icarus to make a wavetable from the wav
3.) Export the wavetable from Icarus. It's in the "2048 samples per single cycle slot" format which is used by many current wt synths like tone2 Icarus and Serum.
4.) Import the WT into MSoundFactory. Set up a pacth with it. The trick is to scan through the WT with a linear slowly rising Envelope which goes throught the WT slot after slot.

Find the "patch" which redroduces the word "cybernetic" attached. Please use a low F key to reproduce the word with "best" quality. Don't remember the exact octave. When you hit the right F note then the original sample is reproduced very well, otherwise it get's mikey moused... (the math behind this is, that for a certain F key the length of a single cycle slot is exactly 2048 samples which is the same as the cycle lenght of the export in number 3).

You might say - wow what a bloody hack. But in the OneSynthChallenge we are not allowed to use samples and therefore it's quite a cool effect to be able to reproduce words ;-) And with Tools like Tone2 Icarus or Audioterm your samples get that special treat...

Many of the rhythmic sounds you can hear in this track are produced by a rhythmic WT A which is in some way combined with a second WT B...I'll try tor reproduce some of these sounds as well and post them here.

And here is a Patch which applies a "rhythmic" wavetable to a simple saw wave.
The wavetable is actually a collection of single cycle slots, each filled with different drum sample.
Now a LFO scans through this WT's slots and the result is used to frequency modulate the SAW.
Play for instance the notes D-1 and D together and you'll get a "nice" industrial pattern...

Chandler (or anyone who knows),
Let's say that I have 2 single cycle waveforms and want to take 15 steps to move from one to the other, the first slowly becoming the second one. How would I save that as it's own wavetable for further experiments?

Perhaps I'm using the wrong terms, or using them incorrectly. I see each waveform (box in the wavetable) as a single cycle wave. The collected boxes are therefore the wavetable, Correct? If so, I would like to have a start and finish point and somehow insert blank boxes between them that will be filled to construct a wavetable. How would I achieve that in MSF?

Just 2 single cycle wave forms? Cross fade? Following Level1 + Level2 = 100%. In any number of steps. Controlling the relative levels of both waveforms/oscillators with any available modulator.

Serum suddenly jumps from one frame to the next. Therefore there are many frames to try and smooth this transition out. If you have a SAW in frame 1and a SINE in frame 2, then want to smoothly morph between them. You must interpolate over 512 frames (for example) so that you cant hear the steps.

In MSF it works differently. Simply add SAW in frame 1 and SINE in frame 2. It will automatically interpolate between the two shapes.

That will be using linear interpolation. With just 2 waves effectively a crossfade.

Using relative level modulation you can have any "interpolation" method or "curve" that modulation sources will allow you to construct (non-linear and/or dynamic if desired).

The number of "steps" is then only restricted by the resolution (number of discreet steps) of the (combined) modulation source(s) used.

BTW. Not saying one approach is better then the other. Just different in (im)possibilities.

I don't believe it is a simple crossfade. It actually changes the wave shape.

Yes it isn't an audio cross-fade, it is waveform interpolation. When you mix a sine and a square with a cross-fade you will hear 50% of each at the mid-point. You won't get that with a wavetable approach.

What is this, please…?

How's it differ from Wave-knob modulation, and how exactly to achieve it with the available controls in any of the WT module panels (a pasted example would be great!)?

As I understand it so far - the interpolation is a set formula and method which cannot be changed. Is this correct?
