I'm pretty sure that the GUI is one of the highest points on their agenda by now. Takes time. Just like you can't expect a new resiazble GUI for Reaktor in no time too, for example. And, we're talking about the whole DAW in this case.

Post

I'm sure it's a major undertaking (for all the reasons already stated in this thread) to tackle a complete overahaul of the UI to high res, but imho it's absolutely necessary at this point. They are literally using graphics from roundabout 2003 at this point. The whole thing just looks and feels clunky because of it. Scrolling the rack is a sludgy, janky process if ever there was one. And everything is small and pixelated and....etc etc. I truly hope it's now Priority #1. It feels like other DAWs are so far beyond Reason on this issue that it's becoming embarrassing; it makes Reason look like a toy.

Post

But... it is a toy? :D :D :D

Post

Love Reason but yes, agree that the basics could do with some TLC. I struggle to read rack devices on a 15" laptop screen and navigating the sequencer is always frustrating. UI improvements is #1 on my wishlist. Might write to the props again.

It's so good, though.

Post

They have to be at least WORKING on a some sort of UI overhaul. If they aren't at least even working on one, Ernst needs to hand in his resignation.

But I just deleted the demo in all seriousness. It does nearly everything but it's a PITA.

But, it could help revive their dwindling user base by drawing in a niche part of the market.
Mathias at Propellerhead recently posted that Reason 10 has been the best-selling Reason of all time. And he's the Lead Product Manager at Props themselves. Whereas you are asserting that Reason has a "dwindling user base". Let me guess where you got your information from: was it from, let's see, nowhere? Yeah, thought so.
But, how many users reverted back to their other DAWs or went a completely different direction after that first implementation of VST? I'm pretty sure all the UAD users couldn't work with that amount of latency and caught the next train out of town.

It's one thing to sell a bunch of copies at a discount price and it's another thing to keep them around for the next version. They've had that problem in the past and as far as I can see, things haven't changed much. I guess we'll see when the dust clears, because I haven't heard many new Reason users speak up much around here.

It could also mean that their sells for the last 5 years were very low and wasn't that hard to beat. The "reason" they took on outside investment, remember?

But, what do I know, I'm only an ex-Reason user.

Post

New Reason user here (since V10) and I absolutely love its interface on my 15inch laptop. It looks great and it feels great - for me easily the prettiest and most easy to navigate DAW I have.

There are certainly things which I think think they direly need to improve but the UI isn't one of them in my opinion.

Ah, so you have inside information on why exactly they "took on outside investment"? By all means: please share it with us then! It would be great to get some information from someone who has been sitting in with them during their business meetings. :tu:

Props were acquired by Verdane Capital - it's not a secret insider information

Edit: Sorry Jens, I misread your post - it still doesn't answer "how" and "why". We can only speculate here :)

Post

Yes, exactly - it's all pure speculation, yet delivered by RH here as if it was a fact, as if he knew something he can't possibly know, except he's inside a very small circle - and if he was, he most probably wouldn't post like that here.

Post

Well, the usual reason to take on outside investment is because you need a capital injection :)

It seems to have helped - implementing VST support can't have been a small or inexpensive undertaking. Hopefully the GUI is next on the list. I think everyone universally agrees that the GUI needs updating, the views just differ on how severe the problem is.
Take a single oscillator, producing a drone. Send it to the wave shaper, altering the tone.
This can be a triangle, Sawtooth or a square. Modulate the pulse width, nobody will care

For serious musicians, they're both toys.

I mean, for those who play a instrument and stuff. Electronic music producers who don't play a instruments aren't musicians. They might not even be humans, but, i'm not sure about that.
