Audio glitches specific to current release 1.6.0.1 - bug.

Hmm - ok, well if it's always occurring at the same point, I suppose it could be some kind of strange maths error. Just to get this straight, is this a glitch in the recording, or is it just a playback glitch?

It's recorded into the file.
I tried playing the affected files back in itunes and they are still there - in the same places.
Could this be an AIFF issue?
Has anyone on the mac tried recording in wave format?

I better clarify something here, I don't always get the same errors at the same point in the timeline.
Having said that, they do seem to happen later in the track.
Perhaps others havent' noticed this because they are recording short takes and/or manipulating loops and samples.
My recordings are more along the line of linear tape production. I try to get long, complete takes rather than cut and paste a part.

It's odd, because there's not really much to go wrong when it's recording, unless the driver itself glitches. The file format won't be the problem here.
I'll have a go at replicating it.

No, it's not a recording glitch, because it occurs in entirely midi songs. I rarely include any audio/Wav files.

For me, there is something with the graphics...

I get the same issue. See my thread on this:

Mine happens anytime the mouse is over a filter or any 'resize' track or filter edge bar line.

I had problems with glitches and crackles with Tracktion and to a much lesser extent Cubasis before I decided it was something to do with my audio card (Audiophile) and my motherboard/chipset, so I changed my motherboard/memory etc and it seems to have sorted it.
But I think reading all the responses to the original post, that people have lots of little problems with all sorts of hardware, and all sorts of programs etc, often the cause is hard drives, graphics cards, soundcard drivers, blimey, just about anything -
I tried searching the net for a solution to my problem, and well, pops and crackles were found in every program, and in every system setup, whether it be VIA chipsets , or Intel chipsets - just do a search for pops and crackles and soundcard etc etc
I think the original poster suggested it was a problem with the latest version of Tracktion, and then actually discovered it was happening when he went back to an older version too -
who wants to go back to a nice simple 4-track with me????
only joking, sort of ...
the truth is out there somewhere, but for every question they'll be a hundred solutions, and it's probably not Tracktion's fault

To summarize, I've used Tracktion since last fall and it has never caused glitches in recorded audio files until very recently. My setup hasn't changed.
I use the built in audio card in my powerbook, which Jules has as well. He's not been able to reproduce the problem, yet.
I've run all the usual system and disc utilities and only seemed to get rid of the glitch in recording problem when reverting to a previous version, 1.5.x.
I record long, continuous takes, like using my old 4-track. These errors happened with NO midi, vst, vsti, racks....etc. AND default settings for latency.
Others have had the problem with various midi set-ups and 3rd party cards. Do I care? Of course but that's not what this thread is really about. There's nothing 3rd party about my setup and I'm getting errors that weren't happening before. For troubleshooting, I reverted to stock Tracktion on stock powerbook, a proven setup that worked for me for a year with no glitches. So why is it happening now?

but you say that you've had the glitch in 1.5.x too now, suggesting it is something in your system, something like a hard drive problem, or virus, or just general clogging up of your system, whatever, which just happened to coincide with 1.6 installjames wrote:Yeah, I think it has something to do with long continuous audio recordings. My errors tend to show up anywhere from 30 to 50 seconds in.
I've not touched the latency settings. They are still at factory defaults!
Sadly, I've now had the glitch in 1.5.x too - only once but VERY clearly there. Suspecting hard drive problems, I ran another complete round of system utilities this afternoon. About the only thing left to try on my end is to dump the preferences file and erase every last Tracktion support file before reinstalling. I'm not sure why this would be necessary but in the interest of troubleshooting, I'll give it a shot.
how are the glitches at the moment?
are you still getting them with 1.5 on a clean system? - if so then obviously it's not a problem specific to 1.6, and how long had you been working without problems on 1.5? If it is something that has suddenly started happening ... blah blah blah ... you get my drift.
This all sounds a bit patronising, sorry,
interested to hear how you get on, cos glitches and crackles in a music programs are surprisingly frequent and absolutely crucial to avoid
cheers

On mine, I've checked IRQ conflicts, DMA settings on the hard drive, full defrag on the hard drive, etc.
Another bug that just cropped up for me is that now the Final MIx presets don't show up anymore. There is another thread on this topic from someone else. I figured that guy didn't know how to see them, but now it's happening to me as well.
It's almost like something got tweaked in the registry - maybe when I installed a new VSTi/VST or something.
I don't want to do a de-installation, but I might just have to do this.
Very frustrating.

I've had no problems at all with the new version. I think I just should have kept my mouth shut but maybe this might lead someone in a cure.
Traction has been so good, that I leave my browser on, my email on, use tons of vst's, including Finalizer a lot and run 7,8 and 9 minute songs.
I record at 24 but one thing I always do is render at 1x.
I cut out all clips that I don't use, mis-takes and mistakes, etc. as I go along.
I have a laptop with 1.8 gig, 256 ram, 40 gig drive, good video card and the Edirol FA-101.
I have had no glitches. I have set up Traction as it came with no tweaking.
However, I haven't been over eight tracks since I use space on already used tracks. It's a little tougher to keep track of but how many simultaneous tracks are the norm when the glitches occur?
And one more question, how do I get rid of total projects in one or two keystrokes?
Thank you,

In answer to how it's going now in 1.5.x:
It's true, Since I started this thread, I've now had a single glitch in 1.5.x but none since that. Frankly, I don't understand it. I'm inclined to think that the one glitch I got in 1.5.x may/must have been a fluke because I can't get it to happen again no matter what I do.
I'm not about to rule out that there's something funny happening in my system but it is unlikely. I'm very conservative about system maintenance and installing 3rd party apps. It's more likely that 1.6 really DOES have a specific bug....somehow. No joking, on one take, I got 4 separate glitches in a 3 minute straight, no-frills audio recording. That's excessive and previously unheard of in my experience using Tracktion over the last year, including the mac beta.
I'm getting ready to try 1.6 again. It's worth another shot in trying to objectively troubleshoot what's happening. If I somehow fixed a system problem running utilities, then 1.6 should work fine, right?

good luck James
computers are just the most frustrating things ever aren't they
they either work, and fine then they just get on and do the job they were supposed and bought to do, or either they just cause grief
my acoustic guitar never lets me down
