I used to play drums and guitar. If i made a track now usigng virtual instruments and a DAW, couldn't i call myself musician all of a sudden? Splitting hairs, in my opinon.

I strongly dislike the usage of "producer", to be honest. Producers for me are mixing and mastering engineers. Simply because that's how the term used to be used.
Because after 25 years of doing it I still don’t know where E is on the keyboard. I know C so I count up from there. Every time. And that’s before we even get into the little squiggly symbols for time signatures.

That’s ample reason to not call myself a musician.
Ask me.

I was never able to read notes, when i played guitar. Not necessary when you cover Metallica and the likes, i guess. :)

Mushy Mushy wrote: Fri May 03, 2019 2:36 pmAgreed. I’m in the same boat. I don’t even have a name for what I do other than farting around with toys. I would never in a million years be so arrogant to call myself a producer and saying musician is simply untrue.
But then there are some bedroom techs learning and plying their producer skills at home, who will go on to have awesome studio careers.
It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world. Except for Lola.

I sez: If you actually make your primary living income from it you can lay claim to it. Otherwise, if forced to define what you 'are' by what you 'do', be real. You are a shelf-stocker / barista / broom pusher / telecom mogul. You are permitted to add 'and I make music on the side' (assuming you have filled the proper forms and submitted them to my authority and waited patiently for your permit).

well you're less likely to give yourself gangrene from using wrong notes or heavy compression :hihi:
I just want it to sound a bit more purple

Chk, ok now you have me conflicted. I know punk bands just picked up the nearest guitar and thrashed about without having any clue about notes etc. But I would call them musicians so

That's how I am with a guitar. Doesn't mean I'm not a musician, it just means I don't play guitar very much or very well.

Oh mate, I don’t know. I think what’s clear is that everbodys situation is different and the conclusion is different in each scenario.

So to be called musician, artist or whatever, you need to starve or play on the streets for spare of change, doing any other side job is not artistic enough?
