Audio Plugin Hosts and other audio software applications discussion

HI

I asked the original question!

I don't think Adobe has Midi, in fact I never imagined Adobe as a program for making music in - but as an editor or compiler of audio for burning to CD.

Perhaps the more informed will give more info, but at best this is an audio only program from what I can see.

Flipper.

Adobe can "use" midi. At least Cool Edit Pro could import midi files (if that's what you meant), and I heard that this option is much more optimized in Adobe Audition. I also was told that it can use VST plugins, but I think it's only about effects. This program is a must for finishing tracks, a great production tool.

Eventually something intelligent will appear written here. Watch this space.

Hi there 2legged,

Firstly, like all the programmes you mention, Audition has "roots". Unlike Cubase or Sonar, though, those roots are specifically audio, and it is still known basically as an audio editing programme.

Where it differs from programmes like WaveLab and SOund Forge though, is that it can run 128 audio channels, has a fully fledged mixer (which is simple but very nicely implemented) and can be a ReWire host...

But unlike Pro Tools or Samplitude, Audition has not yet (and for all I know may never) implemented MIDI editing or VSTi instrument hosting. You can play back MIDI files, but not edit them directly. So for MIDI editing you need to ReWire in a programme that will act as a ReWire client...

Many ReWire compatible programmes (including Audition... and Sonar and Cubase) will only act as a ReWire host.

But Reason, FL Studio, Project 5, Orion, and significantly the new Live 4 (with full-on MIDI sequencing that you have no doubt read all about recently) will act as ReWire slaves, which means that you can effectively run them insider Audcition to cover your MIDI sequencing requirements.

I use Reason for most MIDI work, as well as Live 4... and I have a demo version of FL, which I must say has one of the best piano rolls I have used... all of these are perfect partners for Audition.

Audition does host VST effects though (as well as DX effects like the Sonitus ones you presumably have).

Try out the demo and you will be very impressed with the Acid-style looping tools in Audition. i think they are better than Acid personally (I was an Acid user in the past). Also I feel Audition handles loop painting duties better - and deeper - than Sonar's groove clips, impressive though these are (yes, I have tried both!)

To get to your other specific questions:

1) Audio recording in Audition sounds to me better than in Cubase (I have SX1), Live, Tracktion or Sonar (all of which are pretty good, though). This may be down to me as a user though... I find the mixer and effects in Audition very transparent and powerful, and I really enjoy working in this environment, which no doubt helps me to get better results in terms of my own skill base.

I've not used Pro Tools of any other Mac based programmes, so I can;t make a comparisson there.

2) answered above!

3) ReWire implementation is second to none imho. When you activate a ReWire slave (let's use Reason as an example we both know...) from within Audition's options menu, you have the 3-way choice between a) hooking up the L/R master outs from Reason into 2 Audition channels, b) automatically hooking up all 64 Reason audio outs (which I believe you can;t actually do in Sonar) or c) manually connecting tracks any which way you choose at Audition's channel inputs. Once you make your selection - bingo, it's done in an instant. And it's rock solid. So you can't say fairer than that!

To sum up, I find Audition is at the centre of my musical output now. It gives me the best in audio recoprding, editing, looping and mixing... and I reWire in Live, Reason or FL for MIDI sequencing and other general playing around.

hope this helps... but as always, download the demo from here:

and see what YOU think!

Let us know how you get on!

Thanks Headquest,
After reading your reply to my questions, I now have a much better idea of what Audition can and cannot do.

"'Guess I gotta' download the demo now and take it for a "test drive".
