I have dealt with public shaming for a long time and seen just how destructive it can be to the survival of not just one person, but their family and their community.
I would say, rebuke DiscoDSP, absolutely, but give the company a chance to apologize and mend it's position. If you never give a positive out, then the situation will not improve. Rebuke, yes, but this should not be a public hanging. Let DiscoDSP share their side of the story. You are assuming it's all blind greed and deception, and a shame if it is so, but if the company is desperately trying to put food on the table for their family, that's another story.

first he's asking people to pay for upgrade to new copy protection, now he's basically doing the IK-style "download reactivation fee", except he's not offering any sample libraries - the plugin downloads are always free even with IK - it's basically extortion. and $29 for a year? how often do his plugins get updated during the year? i for one don't remember last time he updated any of the plugins i owned (i sold all of them). this doesn't look very well.

Send me a PM and I'll give you my PayPal address

But there has to be another way of doing that to put food on the table.Vertion wrote: Wed May 29, 2019 1:22 am I have dealt with public shaming for a long time and seen just how destructive it can be to the survival of not just one person, but their family and their community.

Imagine you go to a store to buy something, you pay for it, and then as you're walking out the store somebody stops you at the door and says "Sorry, but you have to pay an additional $10 to take that out of the store and to your car."
You'd look at him like he was on drugs.
And in this case, no warning was given to customers. So a buyer of XYZ plugin bought it in good faith thinking that they can download it anytime they need to only to now find out that they can't unless they pay a cloud subscription.
On what planet is this even ethical?
Sorry, food on table or not, there is NO excuse for this action, which is questionably illegal.

Decent analogy, Wag.
Well-stated comment all-around, I agree.

May as well pile on. I bought his OB-XD for iPad today. This is the result:

Granted, he says a fix is coming, but seriously, how does a product get released for sale like this? It's absolutely useless to me.

The problem with evil is it hides behind a face of good and directs blame at the fool. All too often we are looking for the ones behind the misdeeds and looking to point a finger at any cause of our sufferings, only to get it wrong again and again. The best way to avoid this destructive impulse is to get the whole story and a lot of patience. DiscoDSP may have indeed transgressed as it appears, but before you are ready to self-rationalize those ready-to-throw tomatoes, wait and see how the story unfolds or risk humiliation and guilt upon yourself, or even worse, self-deception and pride. You seem a good guy, I'm guessing Sagittarius..wagtunes wrote: Wed May 29, 2019 1:38 am Sorry, food on table or not, there is NO excuse for this action, which is questionably illegal.

No, I'm a Scorpio and I call things as I see them. I've been burned way too many times by stuff like this and when my radar goes off, rarely, if ever, is it unjustified.Vertion wrote: Wed May 29, 2019 2:39 amThe problem with evil is it hides behind a face of good and directs blame at the fool. There simply cannot be a reasonable excuse for this. Please read my analogy above because this is EXACTLY what has been done.
Sorry but nobody can justify this.
But then that's the world we now live in where we excuse everything.
And that's why the world's in the shape it's in.

For the person with the "censorship" complaint - no, it is governments that censor people, when they do. Private entities only have the power to act like jerks. You're having your say right here.
As am I.
Were discoDSP doing the kind of regular development to get anyone to think of a subscription (a thought that should always be rejected for the sake of financial sanity, unless you run a grant program for software developers), this would still be a bad move. If these guys can't afford to continue, fine. Release the code to the user base and move on. The subscription gambit, out of nowhere, just alienates users. It will cost you support, not improve you finances.
I'm sorry to see this go so wrong.

Discovery Pro and Corona are very good synths and I've remembered to mention that to people I've talked with.

I have a bunch of discoDSP products. I like them and use them. It would be a shame if they stopped working. But, this is the world of plugins and I went in knowing the risks based on the devs track record. So, I'm not surprised and not too concerned about it. i think it would be a long time before I'd need to update so if I have to pay $30 to do that every 4-5 years I'm ok with that, as long as the guy stays in business. the latter is what will kill the plugins. this is an evolving/devolving market that is constantly changing. it takes more guts to be in the plugin market than in the stock market!

Completely outrageous. No warning, no nothing. Unacceptable. He deserves to go out of business if he thinks otherwise. Which he apparently does.
