MGranularMB has a sidechain volume knob for each voice. Where is/are the sidechain input(s) ? Bitwig 2.4.3 only shows the 6 outputs, no sidechain input(s).

By the way, MSF is incredible. The more I explore this synth (and I'm not a sound designer) the more I'm amazed by:

1) The easiness with which all kinds of parameters can be modified (just requires learning a little bit about how things are done, which then can be applied to all other plugins). Especially all kinds of waves: the Shape, Custom, Step and Smooth knobs, as well as their advanced configuration, is a terrific approach to drawing waves - and they can be saved (I believe independently of their function as oscillator wave or lfo wave).

2) The resulting sounds. I always found MPS to be way too much on the cold side of things and as such, did not spent much time at all exploring it. MSF on the other hand offers so much diversity in forging sounds from scratch - not mentioning again the fun that comes from the easiness involved - that it is indeed inviting to explore.

First thank you!

Now, I'm quite lost in the stuff about MGranularMB. I justr opened it in Reaper and it clearly shows input, sidechain and output. I don't think any of Melda effects supports multiple outputs, simply because most hosts don't support it.

You're right: MGranularMB's sidechain input will be shown (in this case in Bitwig 2.4.3) when used by itself as an audio processing plugin. Instead, here it is about MSF and the use of MGranularMB in MSF: where is the sidechain input ?

So it's inside MSF, not an outside sidechain. My question right fron the start was about the existence of an external sidechain input, just like there 's one with the audio processing version of MGranularMB.

Aaaaha, I was just going to ask - because it works here. And no, MSoundFactory doesn't have an external sidechain, you can use it in MXXX though. There probably won't be an effect version, because this way it would technically be a way to hack the entire MXXX for fraction of price...

Hi guys. Would you help me out. The sidechain button in the granular module...what does it do when there is no external sound input is addressed? How is the signal for this parameter triggered and what can be achieved with that option? Can it be done by "steal side chain" via the modules context menu (right click on a module in the matrix)?

Yes I thought so but some things are still unclear to me. I think the example shows that we can choose a signal from line 2 or any of the 6 lines and define it as the sidechain signal.

Now my questions for that matter are, how does that certain sidechain signal act? Is it handled like an incoming audio (actual sound) signal by the module? Or is it handled like a modulation signal that effects the way the granular module reacts when the sidechain knob is dialed in?

An example for a common usage would be a great addition for this discussion. Thank you in advance and have all a joyful time.

I made some weird and ultra complex soundscapes since the beta testing with MSF but recently I am concentrating on the small details of simple things to get closer to the foundation of this marvelous synth universe. It's incredibly awesome what we can do with two single sine wave OSCs alone and the merger-module while having a bit of pitch modulation and octave switching. MSF can sound so thick and great at the low end and so analogish it's a joy. What a bottomless playground MSF is.

Indeed, a little goes a very long way in MSF, due to the very convenient way of modifying various parameters and adding modulations. I'm always amazed, when I start a sound from scratch to explore the synth, that I get to a very expressive and useful sound without even engaging 1/6th of the synth. Or make that less, 1/24th of the synth.

It will simply be amazing as time goes by and more features are added to MSF. And then, if there's a good amount of 3rd party developers with their own high quality devices and sound sets ...

... About which I think some known names of sound set designers should join in the band wagon. There are some very well-known designers that would undoubtedly create great sound sets and devices for MSF.

As for the sidechain handling I can't say since I haven't used MGranularMB much at all yet, although I'd say that the behaviour should be the same as the stand-alone audio processing unit. Why modify that and add more software work and maintenance unless there's a very good reason ? And then that same reason would be applied to other modules with sidechains ... lots of additional work.

The sidechain only comes to effect when you adjust the sidechain parameter in edit mode in the module, it adjusts the percentage of grains taken from the sidechain input. Every grain is then randomly chosen from either the main or the sidechain input with the likelihood of it being the sc input set by the sidechain % parameter.
