Hive doesn't have audio rate capabilities.FalcoreM wrote: Thu Jun 13, 2019 9:02 pm Is audio rate modulation not possible in Hive? Playing with the demo and I can't see a way to do it. I'm trying to modulate osc1 pitch with noise. thx!

Audio rate modulation with 16x unison and stereo filters would be crazy expensive on CPU. We forwent this to make Hive as efficient as possible. A lot of classic audio rate sounds are available through wavetables though: Sync sounds, DX-style FM, a lot of stuff.FalcoreM wrote: Thu Jun 13, 2019 9:02 pm Is audio rate modulation not possible in Hive? I wonder how did Richard (Synapse) manage to do it for DUNE 2/3..Urs wrote: Thu Jun 13, 2019 9:51 pmAudio rate modulation with 16x unison and stereo filters would be crazy expensive on CPU. yes, there is audio rate modulation between osc inside the matrix modulationUrs wrote: Fri Jun 14, 2019 8:00 amFrom a glance at its user manual there are only dedicated FM modes for the oscillators, but not FM between two unsion wavetable oscillators with hard sync enabled.Yorrrrrr wrote: Fri Jun 14, 2019 2:37 amI wonder how did Richard (Synapse) manage to do it for DUNE 2/3..

FYI in Hive you can effectively do windowed hard sync in each wavetable (select e.g. Synced Ramp.wav or Sync Squares in Saw.uhm), and take both unison counts up to 16.

Is it CPU efficient though? Hive's main selling point is being a powerful, quick to program synth that is also light on the CPU. Obviously CPU went up slightly with the introduction of the wavetable engine in v1.2, but if it were to increase again with the inclusion of audio rate modulation then it would be deviating even further away from it's core principles, would it not. u-he being u-he wouldn't likely settle for poo-poo audio rate capability to remain efficient, so CPU use would be high and people being people wouldn't likely *accept a supposedly CPU-efficient synth with high CPU consumption, even if it were an optional/switchable feature, imo of course.carrieres wrote: Fri Jun 14, 2019 9:00 amyes, there is audio rate modulation between osc inside the matrix modulationUrs wrote: Fri Jun 14, 2019 8:00 amFrom a glance at its user manual there are only dedicated FM modes for the oscillators, but not FM between two unsion wavetable oscillators with hard sync enabled.Yorrrrrr wrote: Fri Jun 14, 2019 2:37 amI wonder how did Richard (Synapse) manage to do it for DUNE 2/3..

Heheh, in my experience: It needs one single preset taking up a bit more CPU for a synth to be branded a CPU hog.

You can set the modulation rate in the settings in Dune 2/3. It's also stated in the manual, that it can be quite expensive, when you choose one of the higher quality modes, or audio rate. TBH, i never noticed it take so much CPU, even with audio rate activated. But, i never actually pushed it to the limit, and built very taxing presets with it. Might take quite a bit indeed when you do so.PieBerger wrote: Fri Jun 14, 2019 10:11 amIs it CPU efficient though?carrieres wrote: Fri Jun 14, 2019 9:00 amyes, there is audio rate modulation between osc inside the matrix modulationUrs wrote: Fri Jun 14, 2019 8:00 amFrom a glance at its user manual there are only dedicated FM modes for the oscillators, but not FM between two unsion wavetable oscillators with hard sync enabled.Yorrrrrr wrote: Fri Jun 14, 2019 2:37 amI wonder how did Richard (Synapse) manage to do it for DUNE 2/3..

That was kind of my point, not many people bother reading manuals so will likely miss any clear explanation that CPU use will dramatically increase with audio rate mode enable, so what will happen is people enabling it because they can and then complaining about how high the CPU use and how they were misold the product and so on (aka people being peoplechk071 wrote: Fri Jun 14, 2019 10:28 amYou can set the modulation rate in the settings in Dune 2/3. very obviously, by not worrying about 'efficient as possible.'Yorrrrrr wrote: Fri Jun 14, 2019 2:37 amI wonder how did Richard (Synapse) manage to do it for DUNE 2/3..Urs wrote: Thu Jun 13, 2019 9:51 pmAudio rate modulation with 16x unison and stereo filters would be crazy expensive on CPU. @KBSoundSmith: to echo your post, I feel like all I need is Bazille and Hive 2. I've spent the last 2/3 years extensively experimenting with Bad' (to the point I'd consider it my fave synth) and now that I've spent some time with Hive 2 it feels 100% on par.
Actually I'm working on a slew of tunes (hopefully releases) and am solely using both (even for drums, H2 is very promising here as well)... and never felt that inspired. It might seems restrictive for many, but I'm basically in sonic heaven now.
It's extremely liberating to me to rely on a couple of synths (I did a whole LP with Diva only a few years ago, I suppose I'm sort of a monomaniac hehe), and they're just perfect for me. Will certainly add Z3 to the set-up once it's eventually released but eh, no rush.
Once again, bravo Urs.
I know what you mean..after spending years trying out every plugin on the market i have finally settled with what is actually a small(ish) set of tools - mainly from DMG, U-he, Roland etc.
I just made two entire tracks with just hive and the roland 909, only using DMG equilibrium for eq and Compassion and Powair for compression. It does something really interesting to your decision making process to use just a few tools, as you really squeeze everything you can out of whats in front of you - rather than just flipping through 100 compressors every time you want to do a few dbs of GR.
