Previewing midi items from library / files view

Is it possible to easily preview midi items from the library / files view?
Ideally this would work like Reaper:
- clicking on the midi item runs it through the currently selected / armed track – so it goes through whatever synth / sound generator is on that track, exactly as though the midi item was on the track and playing back
- it runs at the BPM of your edit
- it runs whilst you're playing your entire edit, so you can "audition in place"
- you can easily filter your library by *.mid
- you can easily visualise the structure of the selected midi clip
… can any of this be done in Tracktion? It would be a great workflow boost if it's possible!
So far the midi capabilities seem to be the weaker aspects of Tracktion.
Thanks for listening!

I thought i can get it working with midi loopback and waveform. i use loopb internal midi as input for track 1. and in the sound browser i set in outputs loopbe internal midi. when play on my midi keyboard it play sound on track 1, because i set in sound browser inputs to my midi keybaord. I enable preview and apply or disable apply or disable preview but with no setting it play the step clip or a midi clip. how can get it working. ? what should the preview button do ?. i am sure the loopback work ok, because my midi keyboard can work correct when real time play.
usefull is, have a script or direct function that start play of song at the "in" marker and start at same time browser preview too, so they play in sync. so can test diffrent midi drums or meledies together with drums
i find how can i start sequencer at in marker, but i did not find how to start browser preview
i see key v is free so i add it to key v
Tracktion.jumpToMarkIn();
Tracktion.startStopPlayback();

I test tracktion 7 demo, this have same problem as waveform and can not play a preview of midi clip. when click in browser on search and tag step clips then there come some buildin drum clips. i can choose microsoft gm synth and it play when tracktion use windows audio. but double click on for example Step Clip Blues 1 do nothing. Wy this not work ?.

I would like to see this feature work in Tracktion Waveform. It is handy to have this ability in other DAWs. If you have many MIDI clips in your library it seems like a lot of extra work to drag them into your tracks just to preview them.terminus_one wrote:Is it possible to easily preview midi items from the library / files view?

This works in Reaper and Sonar.

Agreed – I'm surprised that it's been over a year since my original post and nothing's been done about it. I applaud Tracktion on the Waveform release (a seriously fun DAW!) but things like this would really help the overall experience, especially since the files/library browsing is amongst the best around, but has this glaring omission (in my opinion).
Maybe with the advent of better MIDI editing, and composition tools, this will be something tackled very soon?

the best solution is in magixmusic maker. it can of course preview when play is stop a single midi or audio. but the best is when play is on. then it add temporary the phrase and you can hear the phrase together with other tracks. see video. maybe something as this can do with the script language of tracktion ?

the audio preview too work not correct btw. In settings it is possible to set Loop Previewing Match Tempo and pitch(its default) . and sync loop previews to edit is on. but the ogg or wav audio is not stretch to tempo. it play always at same speed and out of sync.
Edit: the wav or oggs are add with 120 bpm speed, only after i save to library it work ok, tempo correction work ok with audio added to library. what the sync do i do not know. on reaper they work, and when i change bpm in reaper the wav and ogg play faster or slower

In Tracktion/Waveform we only use the file's metadata to determine the tempo/pitch of the file. If this isn't present we don't attempt to sync as we don't currently have our own tempo/pitch detection.
When you save a file to your library, it will have this metadata added and hence will sync correctly.
What this means in practice is that only Acid WAV, Apple Loop AIFF and Apple CAF files will sync correctly.

the thousands of ogg files from music maker have a entry _MXMUMA_BPMInt=90 in ogg file for example. reaper read this and choose correct tempo. waveform do not. but ok, i look at ogg specification now, its not a ogg standard.

Ah, that's interesting, we're certainly open to adding more metadata readers if they're around. Do you have any official documentation on this and other OGG metadata? Perhaps we can add support for it if it's pervasive enough.magicmusic wrote:the thousands of ogg files from music maker have a entry _MXMUMA_BPMInt=90 in ogg file for example. reaper read this and choose correct tempo. waveform do not. but ok, i look at ogg specification now, its not a ogg standard.

it seem this MXMUMA entries are from magix only done. in short i guess mxmuma is (m)magi(x)(mu)sik(ma)ker . i search in reaper exe folder for text MXMUMA. there is no such text. maybe reaper work in that way that it assume a audio file is 1 or 2 or 4 bars long or a divide of that. so it calc the tempo which bpm have 1 bar 2 bar 3 bar 4 bar at the sound time. it choose the nearest to 120 i gues. because when i hear mp3 songs generate from song that is load in reaper. media explorer play at wrong speed when tempo match is on. so tempo match need switch off.

I just opened the "Files" list in the Browser and clicked through my collection of drum midi files to pick one file for a project.
The problem is, these drum files are not played as drums but with some synth sound (which makes previewing almost useless, obviously).
I was searching for where I can set the synth/sound for "loop preview" and found (only) this thread.
Can I define the correct file preview sound somewhere?
Or is previewing drum files with a drum sound not possible?
