How would I create a certain guitar amp in mxxx?

Can you identify the qualities that make it unique?
For example: When pushing the input signal, how are the harmonics effected as saturation turns into full on distortion?
Can you identify the tonal ranges of the Low, Mid and High knobs?
What kind of filtering is present between the Rhythm and Lead channels?
How do the Resonance and Presence knobs function in each preamp section?
These are the types of things that you need to be familiar with in order to create a recreation. Once you have a grasp of what the amp is doing to a sound, recreating it with plugins becomes a much easier task.
Finding a schematic of the amp sometimes help to determine how things are connected and where there influences may be the strongest. Types of capacitors can help you to understand the ranges of influence that a knob may have. (the higher the cap value, the wider the range of frequencies get rolled off.)
Ask yourself questions about each knob and what is happening before and after it...and what plugin could be used to recreate that effect on a sound.
