when you save the same project, a backup is automatically made. up to 10 backups will be created for project with unique name. So if you save as project2 for example within same folder, then that gets it's own backups.

The term 'automatic project backups' bw is using is a bit misleading imo.
To most people, autosave or automatic project backup means the app will automatically save your work without your input - at timed intervals or for every change made to the project in the case of logic x.
This new function included in BW 3.0 will save a separate copy of your project every time you overwrite your current save (by pressing ctrl+s for example). It saves in a separate folder inside your project. Basically it automatically gives you iterative saves of your project file, but only every time you manually save the project. Not super useful for me since I manage my iterative saves, but it might be useful for some who don't. An autosave every 5 minutes or so would be much more useful for most people I think.
If you're thinking, well Bitwig already has the automatic backup because if Bitwig crashes it gives you the option to restore your projects - unfortunately this doesn't work reliably. You almost always lose your cue markers and project layout. And quite often VST fx or instruments will be completely reset to default. (imagine a project with 100-200 vst, you will have to check each one to make sure it hasn't gone back to default before continuing). I hope this problem will be fixed in a future update!
