I just made a project inspired by all 32 original DX7 Algorithms. I also made an humble attempt to recreate some classic DX7 patches from the original cartridges. I did not bother to make them sound exact, and left out all lfo modulation, because I have a LinnStrument and rather modulate with my expressions.
It shows, that even the two algorithms which span more than one oscillator (4 & 6) are possible.
Its a starting point for expressive FM... Have fun...

A simple spectrum analyzer and oscilloscope proves that .
Take algoritm 6 (which needs the delay time and ) , now on a dx7 or dexed set the carrier (op5)to full output and the modulator (OP6) to halfway so we get a sawish like tone .
Same can be done with bitwig ( use the sine instead of cosine)
Now increase the feedback knob on dexed ( full amount ) , because the modulator's(op 6) gain is not at full range , the feedback wil not collapse and we will get a squarish tone .
Now do the same in the grid , you will never be able to achieve the same tone , because of the nasty 6ms delayline
