FM8 was -and sounded- lovely when it was released. And well, it still sound lovely.( as in 'What sounded good yesterday stills sounds good today')
Coming from the traditional Yamaha FM synths, I like that you can freely decide of any algorythm you can think of, instead of the fixed algos.

More waveforms is a plus too. As are effects etc. The GUI/UI is very simple and easy to work with, if you"re used to FM a la Yam.

Still my prefered FM synth. You can make wonderful patches with this beast. It has incredible depth for programming. Ymmv.

I recently tried FM8 in my project. Dropped just a handful of presets, but indeed they sound fantastic when used right.

The GUI, however, is dated - quite difficult to see what's going on, and small font and buttons makes it tiresome to use, yet alone improvise and check all the options.

I recently re-discovered FM8, I think because of the Adam Szabo audiodemo.

With some post-processing it still sounds fresh and contemporary, and also different. Much rougher than actual wavetable soft synths....

Hi guys, please check out AuroraFM from Nebula Audio. Incredibly good sounding FM synth, which the dev now spent some additional month to bring out a huge update with much more features soon. It is already a fantastic FM synth but it will be a killer afterwards.

The next FM recommendation is the full blown totally feedbackable 8 OP FM module inside of MSoundfactory from Melda Production. Everything is modulatable. I mean each and every parameter of the 8 OPs.

And last but not least the wonderful FM Chipsynths from Plogue Art at Technology. You won't find FM engines more true to the original chips and with more mojo and character.
