In this video I go over the more advanced features of the modal filter. The modal filter has an amazing ability to get the harmonic info from a wav file and from there you can shape the sounds however you want. On top of that you can morph between sounds to create new and unheard of tones. This feature is IMO revolutionary for sound design and creating new interesting timbres. AFAIK no other synth on the market has a feature like this. I hope you find this as interesting as I did. If you have any questions about it let me know.

EXcellent, thanks! …and…wow! Had no idea how amazing that Structure panel is.

Once different harmonics are assigned to the corners, the x-y panel is reminiscent of a similar feature of Sculpture in Logic. Is there any way to record mouse movements of the puck around the panel, as can be done there?

You can link multiparameter to the X and Y knobs and automate the multiparameter then. This is what you asked for, kidn of, right? Otherwise sorry, if this might not help in your situation.

There is no facility (yet!) for the kind of animation you see in, for example, Rob Papen synths. You can animate X and Y movement independently with two separate modulators and thus achieve a two-dimensional animation. In theory, you could thus define any periodic movement you could want this way. In practice, that would be tricky business to translate your vision of a two-dimensional pattern into two separate modulator transform curves. But there's no way to directly record the the movement of a mouse.

As Tagirijus said before you can hook them to multiparameters. From there you can automate them in your DAW and record that automation. After it is recorded as midi cc it can be replayed, so you can make it move however you want.

Just watched this again, and liked it even better:) Is there any hope that your device shown in it will one day be available, either in the Exchange, or the Factory Device collection, or …? It's very cool, and seems would make a great template for fast, efficient Modal Filter explorations.

David - Thanks. I want to submit it in the future, so hopefully it will be included. I've been a little busy recently, so I haven't made any new devices, but I have between 5- 12 that are pretty much done. That one needs just a little more work.

Here's an experiment based on some ideas from this video, built into a device with 50+ DPresets, delivered here as paste-able code, but capturing all the presets as well because the Device is loaded into an instance of MSF running as module in the FX tab, which should allow the presets to come along… I'll be very interested to hear if this worked!

EDIT: FINALLY got some feedback suggesting that this include-the-presets work-around doesn't actually work, which is a pity….

So, anyway, the device and the presets file are zipped up in the attachment just added, for placing in the MsoundFactoryInstruments folder, as described in the first post, here:

Built on the Main Template for its very useful FX selection, this is a variation on some ideas in Chandlerguitar's Physical Modeling video #4, designed espeically for use with the built-in Arp in MSF, or with any other Arp or Seq, so it partly focuses on short to short-ish sounds with lots of controls for adding variety when they are triggered with random or repeated patterns.
It uses all 4 corners of the Modal Filter's Structure parameter, so changing these would be well worth exploring, and it includes presets expressly for exploring such structures.
Since the envelope for these sounds comes from the Drum Synth's length control, and the Modal Filter's Resonance level, the Main Template's full Envelop controls are not included nor needed, except for the Tremolo rate which offers lots of interesting textures, and this is included in the Tinger Tab, along with the EZ Convolver, which is used here more as a tone and filtering device than as a reverb or ambience tool, though it does some of that, too. Short lengths obviously are more percussive, while longer lengths offer bowed and sustained textures, and more scope for the Tremolos (there's one in the Effects tab as well) to work on.
The Color controls target a Bandpass Filter set to respond to velocity.
The semi and cents Pitch knobs are mainly there for external modulation in a DAW, but the cents are also modulatable internally with the Vibrato Depth control, as well as being velocity sensitive.
Arpeggiator controls allow easy speed and note-length adjustments from the easy screen, to match widely varied envelope lengths. The arp can be as useful as a phrase and loop designer as a test-note trigger when tweaking parameters.

This'll be going into the MSF Global Presets Exchange, too, and I've already shared with the Exchange for the Modal Filter's Harmonics Preset Browser a preset with all 32 harmonics activated, each with its Volume modulated with True Random as shown in Chandler's video. You'll still have to create an MP targeting the Depth control on each of these modulations to have access to that Hit Variations knob Chandler showed us, but part of the work is done already, at least:)
