…and here's the device and presets for my first experiment in D Preset capture described a few posts back.

David, I haven't got time to read through this (sorry)
But in short, are you asking if device presets are saved with devices when shared on the online exchange or otherwise? If so, then the answer is no, they are saved as a separate file.

Nope, that was all established at the start of this thread, and was part of the reason for it: A place to add Preset files to Exchanged Devices. A bit later, I thought I'd found a work-around by sharing Presets that had devices loaded inside them, in the MSF FX grid. Disappointed to find that this didn't work, for the same reason, so it bears repeating: Device Presets only exist in a separate file no matter how you deliver the device. A shame there's no equally smooth, built-in way to exchange/distribute preset files along with the devices they're for.

You can export the device presets using the preset browser (inside the device). They will export all together as one file. I would say that is a faily smooth way to exchange device presets, right?

I don't follow. I love the idea, but how to Exchange an Export?jmg8 wrote: Mon Jul 22, 2019 9:33 pm You can export the device presets using the preset browser (inside the device). They will export all together as one file. I would say that is a faily smooth way to exchange device presets, right?

Just spotted this, in the list of plans for MSF in here (https://www.meldaproduction.com/doc/MSoundFactory), which I suppose has been there for a while and I just missed it. Sounds promising if not maybe relevant to the Exchange:
Global instrument preset browser, which would allow access not just to the devices, but their own presets, all in one place

I’m pretty sure device export isn’t ready yet. I don’t know for sure, but I think Vojtech is trying to get the sampler done first. He talked about exporting everything together in a pack that can be imported in one click, which makes sense. As things are now that doesn’t seem to useful, but when samples and IRs are involved, having everything together in 1 file will make everyones lofe easier. I’d just wait until then before trying to share device presets.

I'm sure you're right, but not so sure it'll have any impact on the Exchange—hope I'm wrong! But I'm too old to wait:) Thanks for inspiring this, btw!

A taste from the left field, out in back of the Factory…Here's the Presets file zipped up with the device (see the first post in this thread for where to put these).
Once you've got the Device itself (the .minstrument file) saved to the location mentioned, which you may have to do as a separate step using the Export Device button from Edit view, you should be able to drag the .presets file to the same place. So long as both files have exactly the same name, you won't have to export or import to see the presets when that device is loaded. Of course, you could just drag both the files from the zip there, and skip saving device-exporting the Exchange or code-pasted Preset.

I don't want to de-rail the thread, but I am confused by the two directories for instruments and presets:
The AppData Roaming folder and the ProgramData folder (on Windows). These seem nearly the same, but a little different.
Also I am confused by trying to Import stuff into the Sound Factory preset list, for example:

About the contents of the two folders: I think that those in ProgramData are essentially a factory back-up and those in AppData are those that can be edited. I am not sure what happens when a new release is installed.
I have never heard of a .dpc file. But won't you need to get the files out of there, then select the one you want?

It's not a .dpc file, it's a folder - DPC is Dave Coffin's initials.
These are from his previous post a few submissions up.

The import only allows folders to be selected. The instruments and presets are not selectable in this menu.DarkStar wrote: Wed Aug 07, 2019 4:27 pm But won't you need to get the files out of there, then select the one you want?

Is that a screenshot of the Presets Browser? Presets that you Import there have a .mpresets file extension. It looks like those two files are a Device and its presets. I do not know how to import those.
Also, in your screenshot, you have the "Root" folder selected. Go carefully as if, during an Import, you clicked [Replace] then all the current contents will be lost.

I don't know how to import Devices or their Presets either; maybe (so far anyway) you can't. I always use the OS file system.
The place to put the Device files I've uploaded in this thread (unzipped, they are a pair, like so: whatevername.minstrument and whatevername.presets) is always in the folder called
MSoundFactoryInstruments,
which is always inside a folder called
MeldaProduction, as here:
Windows: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\MeldaProduction\MSoundFactoryInstruments
Mac: HOME/Library/Application support/MeldaProduction/MSoundFactoryInstruments
Linux Xubuntu 18.04 LTS:/users/[username]/Application Data/MeldaProduction/MSoundFactoryInstruments/
That puts the device in the Device-view browser, which you can only see when you're not in Edit Mode:

…and when that opens, the Device Presets will be in its Browser already, no need to import.
I don't use the Import/Export system in MSF browsers for these files; not what that is for, AFAICT.
I only use that when I've created a new version of a saved device and want access to the Device Presets I made for the earlier version, which don't automatically get included in the new save.
Of course I have to remember to EXport them from the earlier version first (I put 'em on the Desktop), so I can then IMport them!
A bit clearer than mud, I hope!
