I thought a project I named "test 1" was far along enough to deserve a new name, so I typed a new name in the name box in the project window and... boom, all the content disapeared, all the edits, all the wave file, everything. Furthermore, the file on the HD kept the original name, but shows up in T with the new name.

I'm sure there is.
The project name can be different from the underlying file name, so dont worry that the file name doesn't match.
Edits and clips should all still exist, so it should be possible to recreate the project if needs be.
My guess though is that you could probably just close the project (right click and select close) then reopen it (open project button). I had something similar happen once and this worked for me.

Yes, but i didn't take the precaution of saving that project in it's own folder, so everything is mixed up with other stuff; and all have non descript name like edit_040910_130255.trkedit...valley wrote:I'm sure there is.

happened to me before as well. close tracktion, go to the folder with the newly named tracktion-edit, right click and choose open with, select tracktion (errm, hope you're on pc), then it should be able to open it as an imported edit once you started tracktion again.
if that doesn't help, I'll try on my own again, but there is a way to regain access to all files of that certain edit, I'm just on adifferent login now so I can't do it.

Thanks Valley and Thoshu, but no joy. I was able to find the edit, by a process of elimination, and import it back, the midi file were there, but no audio file. I then brought in all the audio file from that folder into the project window, but the edit window still shows all the audio file as missing.
I then tried the "find orphan clip" function to try and screen out the audio file, but it showed all the audio file as orphaned??? I KNOW the original audio is in there...
I'm now concluding this project as a goner, but it scares the heck out of me for future. How could simply changing the name of a project cause all this havoc?

Why not just re-name the project "test 1" like it originally was? Nothing got lost or destroyed when you changed the name.
It's just that computers are totally stupid. You changed the name, so the computer didn't know where to look for the file.
If you put all the files back to where they were ( which I guess was just sitting randomly scattered about in the project folder) and use the original name "test 1" it should open.
If you locate all of the files, including the audio you can't find as of yet, you can put them in a folder in the project folder. Give that folder the name you want the project to have.
To open the project click on "open a project". When the box with all of the project folders opens just enter the new project name and then double click on the folder you created for the new project.
Save yourself this trouble in the future by creating a new folder for every new project.

Thanks PT, I've tried all your suggestions already, no joy. The two edits that were in that project lost all audio file association, and nothing I tried would make it recognise anything. I even imported the file in Traction edit, all of them, and they would all play no problem; then I opened them in a audio editor, they all played fine there also so there is no audio file corruption at work here (anyway, the file system is NTFS, and I have yet to have a corrupt file on this type of file system). Traction simply refuse to recognise any of them as part of the edit...
I suspected somthing could be wrong with my computer, so last evening I ran 2 complete virus scan, then ran memtest and let it run overnight, I ran the Maxtor disc utility and did a complete HD scan this morning and I've just finished running Sandra. My PC passed every test with flying color; I almost whished there was somthing wrong with it so I could fix it, but everything seems to point out to a program error while Tracktion didn't even crash, the project just went blank...

Happened to me a couple of times.
Once I was able to import almost all the bits and pieces, and associate the blank audio sections with the right clips. The other time all was lost.

I always make a copy of each project folder and store them in a folder outside of Tracktion. I update these copies when I have made any major changes to the originals. This way if an edit becomes corrupted I can use the copy.
