Yes, the consensus in Norther California is that we need to be able to modify the modulator source for the modulation slots in the grid, not just the depth, via an MP. :D

Would anyone find this MS Excel spreadsheet handy (once I have got it right!)?. It is a way of visualising the results of a modulation row.

Enter the value or depth or both for each slot:
-- a number between 0 and 1,
-- or "S" for a Sine wave, "T" for a Triangle (ramp) or "A" for an ADSR envelope
Enter the operators: "Mul", "Add", "Sub", "Max, "Min" or "Off"

I'm afraid that won't be possible, at least for now. Once we do that, it will be IMPOSSIBLE to add more modulation sources.

OK, sounds reasonable. But I still have an outstanding question. If depth of slot 1 is zero, is there optimization to skip the processing for that row (at least for the one-slot situation or two-slot with the Mul operator)? Or is there some other way to "turn off" a row that we know is not needed, even if slot 1 is not Off?

I want to offer the user an easily select-able choice of, for example, mod wheel, pressure and CC74. I could do that by using three rows in the grid and having the depth of two of them be zero. I'm just concerned about the unnecessary overhead of doing that.

Only if you *promise* you've got it right. :D

Seriously, this would be potentially useful. I suspect you correctly worked out the Mul scenario with more than two slots used. I haven't tried to think about that because a) my head my explode and b) I can't think of any real-life situation where it would be needed. Same is true for the non-Mul operators. I have a real-life scenario where I take advantage of addition of the outputs of multiple rows, but I have yet to come across a scenario where I want anything but Mul as an operator between row slots.

Well, there's no optimization specifically for that, but that's easy to add ;). But let's first think about better ways - I mean how can we do a selection besides that... I mean at some point we could say "stop there won't be any further modulation sources", but that seems scary to me :).

Maybe you can make it selectable, but with a bunch of reserved slots for future mod sources that could be added later. You did this with the crossover modes, I think there were a few reserved slots there. Would this work?
As for the 0% depth optimisation, this should be added anyway, it just makes sense.

Maybe it makes sense when using the Mul operator, but I'm not so sure about, say, a row that uses the Add or Max operator. But then, I don't fully grasp what these do in the first place - things like operator precedence and so forth ... must learn more!

One general solution for optimization that would be independent of future mod additions would be a Row Bypass option.

OK, give this a go:

In the first section you can choose various predefined types of values and depths; in the orange cells, enter a number between 0 and 1, or "S" for a Sine wave, "T" for a Triangle (ramp) or "A" for an ADSR envelope. In the green cells, enter the Operators: "Mul", "Add", "Sub", "Max, "Min" or "Off". THe final reslut is the solid "Melda-red" curve.

In the second section, you can enter any values (or your own equations!) in the orange cells. In the green cells, enter the Operators: "Mul", "Add", "Sub", "Max, "Min" or "Off".

The third section is just if you want to try out various values and the row totals.
