I'd like to get a good chip tune synth - just something to play around with to have some fun. Looking in the $25-50 range.

Check out Minibit by Audio thing. It's a good synth and is even on sale right now.

Why? Have you heard a chiptune thing that sounds good?

Video games and old consumer PC boxes sounded like crap when they were new. None of it is more attractive decades later.

Obviously you want that sound for some reason. I hope the reason pays well.

Sorry, I just do not see the attraction. Mainly it seems the fad is coming from people who were not around for the first iteration.

If it pays well, however, try the Plogue thing or some of the Korg Gadget collaboration projects. Otherwise, avoid - that's my view.

Schmidi, thanks much for the reminder that Audiothing is still having their Summer sale. I find Chipsynth a bit, I dunno bloated for chip stuff for my tastes but that looks like a good way to just get some aliased triangle goodness.

Agreed. Happy Minibit user here. Totally recommended. It nails the sound with no effort.

This track is 100% Minibit, including drums. About 20 instances.

I actually put my reasoning in my OP - "just something to play around with to have some fun." I actually was a kid during that first iteration - great memories of those old video games.

The reason doesn't pay well - I'm a hobbyist and a poor musician to boot. I like to sit down on a Friday night, have a good beer, and play around. But thank you for your concern.

Everyone else - thank you for the recommendations. I'd really like to have Plogues Chipsounds - but $95 isn't in my price range. Anyone know if it ever goes on sale? I'll definitely check out the Minibit - looks right up my alley.

You won't be dissapointed by Minibit, and it goes on sale from time to time.

Besides that, If you just want to play around and you have an iPad or a Switch, I totally recommend you to try Korg Gadget. There's even a free demo for both iOS and Mac (not sure about Switch), and the iOS version is 20 bucks when on sale. Some of the included plugins (here named "gadgets") are specific for chiptune, and the whole package is SUPERTOP quality. Super-super-fun. I got the iOS version three weeks ago, one of the best purchases I've ever done.

I own a license for MiniBit, and I think it is a great buy.

If you have the full version of Kontakt, Impact Soundworks offers a free instrument library called Super Audio Boy which you can use to make chip tunes.

Impact Soundworks also sells two chip tune instrument libraries for Kontakt Player that sound great: Super Audio Cart (game consoles) and Super Audio Cart PC (vintage PC and home computer sound chips).

It's a genre of music fueled by the nostalgia factor. Not unlike Lofi or 80's synthwave. Or like listening to vinyl records. Think about it. We spent decades trying to get pristine audio. Now we spend thousands of dollars on plugins and gear to put the hiss, buzz, distortion, etc, back into our now crystal clear digital recordings. It's not the quality, it's the character of the sound that we want to revisit.

+1 for Minibit. A Casio VL-1 emulation (Autodafe Casio VL-1 for example) could be also a nice supplement.

We could also add an emulation of the famous Stylophone, as the one made by Superwave for example.

Reccomend a good chip tune synth?
