I just got Tracktion packaged with the Mackie Spike system and I'm trying to set up the VSampler VSTi so I can have different instruments on different midi channels. How would I do this without opening multiple copies of VSampler ?

You need to use racks. Have a look at the excellent rack tutorials found on adbes site by following this link:

http://www.adbe.org/guides/tracktion/racks.html

Here you'll also see various other uses of racks.

Good luck!

I had a look at the guides - thanks for the link.
The guides show how to deal with multiple audio inputs, but not multiple midi channels. I'm trying to have different instruments on their own midi channel (bass on ch1, synth on ch2, drums on ch 10, etc).

johnl,
I'm not familiar with the specifics of VSampler, but I can tell you how I do it with SampleTank. Forgive me if this isn't perfect- I'm not in front of Tracktion right now.
1)I load ST into track 1.
2)I load a preset into channel 1 of ST, and record whatever I'm going to record onto track 1.
3)I click on the wonderful MIDI input icon (to the left of the tracks) and the equally wonderful info window at the bottom of the screen displays MIDI controller-specific info. One of the items it displays is a channel selector. I change the channel to 2 (because I want to control the preset I'm about to load into ST's channel 2).
4)I open the ST window and load a new sound into channel 2. Now when I play my controller I hear whatever sound I loaded into ST's channel 2. So now, I can keep recording onto track 1 (and newly-recorded parts will play back on ST channel 2), or...
5)I drag the MIDI input icon to track 2 because I want to record the new part there. At this point I won't hear anything when I play the controller and Tracktion (I think) throws up a helpful prompt telling me that I'm not hearing anything because track 2 isn't routed to anything that would generate sound. So I click track 2 itself to bring up track-specific info in the bottom panel. There, on the right, I tell Tracktion I want to route Track 2 to Track 1 (which has ST loaded). Then I should hear ST's channel 2 patch when I play the controller.
6)Record away!

I believe the above to be fairly accurate, but if I'm steering poor johnl wrong and/or there is a better way to do this, somebody please jump in.

Otherwise, enjoy Tracktion johnl! Like many of the people in this group, I feel Tracktion offers one of the best music-recording experiences available.

Ah, I was a bit fast there. Anyways, if you want several audio outs, connect it like in the rack tutorials.

As for using different midi channels, do this:

1. Select the midi clip where you want to use e.g channel two.

2. Drag the channel slider (from the midi clip properties in the bottom middle of the screen, above the volume slider) until it says two.

3. Play some notes on you midi keyboard, voila!

If like me, you find having to change the MIDI channel slider everytime you want to hear a new sound then download Niall Moodys excellent ndcMIDI plugins. You can get them here: http://www.niallmoody.com/ndcplugs

Unzip them into your Tracktion plugins folder.

Put your Vsampler into a rack, as normal, then drag instances of Vsampler onto every track that you want a paricular instrument on. (I assume with Vsampler that you assign each instrument to a different MIDI channel)

then drag an instance of MIDIchanneliser onto each track before Vsampler, and set the channel of MIDIchanneliser to the instrument you want to hear.

Et voila, every time you point your MIDI input icon to a particular track, it will play back on the MIDI channel you have specified. No more mucking around with the slider at the bottom of the page.

The other plug ins are great too - I especially like the MIDInotetrans.

Hope this is useful

Thanks everyone for the help. I've got multiple midi channels running into 1 VSTi now. Channeliser plugin should cut down on the RSI too !

One thing I have noticed. I can only use automation for the VSTi on one track - the track with the VSTi inserted. Other tracks that have thier outputs routed to this track do not allow me to draw automation curves (except for pan and vol). Is there any workaround for this ?

johnl, just drag the "A" from the track you want to automate on to the VSTi filter you have inserted, and choose the parameter you want to automate.

E.g. I have Sampletank LE in track 1 with a midi clip playing drums (midi channel 1). In track 2 I have a midi clip playing a guitar (midi channel 2). Track 2s output is routed to track 1.

If I want to automate e.g. the volume parameter for the guitar, I just click on the "A" symbol in track 2 and drag it on to the Sampletank LE filter in track 1. Now I get to choose what parameters I want to automate. The automation curve for the guitar volume will now appear on track 2.
