Ooh! Why so serious?
Some of us making fun actually love this sound (me) and like the song a lot (me). Then, some of us (like me) have also made this patch a billion times at various times for various synths and companies, even making it on a real Oberheim OBXa. So you keep on Jumping and have fun while doing it!

After trying on 2 other synths that lacked punch I think I got as close as I can get using a digital synth. I have listed my settings if anyone wants to try...
The sound in this song was made on a KingKorg...
OSC1: Saw detuned +5 mix level 127
OSC2: Saw detuned -5 mix level 127
Analog drift: 30
Portamento: 005
Unison: OFF
Filter: LPF OB
Cutoff: 127
Resonance: 30
Full velocity
KeyTracking: -10
EG1 Filter: A: 0, D: 100, S: 105, R: 0
AMP Filter: A: 0, D: 115, S: 50, R: 12
Tube: On with Boost, Drive: 30
EQ: High: 70, Low: 50 or detent
Pre FX: OFF
Mod FX: OFF - NO CHORUS BECAUSE IT WILL SMOOTH IT OUT TOO MUCH!!!
Reverb: Plate: Depth: 127 Time: 4
Recording technique:
One track panned hard left with reverb
Second track panned hard right with reverb and slightly lower volume and delay of maybe 20msec

I briefly played Jump on a new pipe organ, once.
I had just finished installing this pipe organ in a church, and a young music director at the church dropped by with his wife to check out the new organ. I briefly demoed some of the different pipe sounds on the organ, and then I hit the first 2 or 3 opening chords of "Jump", just for fun. Everyone's eyes darted around and we looked at each other knowingly, we all smiled slightly, and I moved on to demoing other parts of the organ. Without them saying a word, their reaction was basically "Hey, I know that song!" Along with a bit of: "I never expected to hear it in church on a pipe organ."
It can sound glorious on a pipe organ, though. It's not a requirement to exactly nail the same exact Oberheim sound that Eddie used on the record.

The funny thing is about the jump patch is if you listen to the original, I feel like the decay is set too fast which kills the bass. Kind of sucks to hear it after liking that song for so many years.

Oh, that's an easy one. The band House of Pain sampled an existing song by Jr. Walker & the All Stars, titled "Shoot Your Shot". You can check out a comparison here:layzer wrote: Fri Mar 08, 2019 9:38 pm i wonder what OBXA patch they used for the scream on this jump song?

House of Pain also sampled three other sources to create "Jump Around". You can read the details of those here:

The real question is, how did Jr. Walker & the All Stars get their hands on an Oberheim OB-Xa back in 1965!?

Easy. It was the 60s, and anything was possible back then if you took enough drugsMcLilith wrote: Mon Sep 16, 2019 5:43 pm The real question is, how did Jr. Walker & the All Stars get their hands on an Oberheim OB-Xa back in 1965!?![]()

The Saurus preset is called 'JumpBrass'. You can find it within the Brass category.

Saurus is a great synth, but this right here is a good demonstration of the problem with 99% of all "Jump" presets in the world. That's a really nice synth brass (and I absolutely love those kinds of sounds), but it just doesn't have much to do with the synth sound in the Van Halen song Jump. It's like the preset author never even bothered to compare the sound with the original.Markus Krause wrote: Tue Sep 17, 2019 11:37 am The Saurus preset is called 'JumpBrass'. Once again, here's my take: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1d4_Ee ... 14xK6yTDpv
The first half is my sound, the second is the original song. This is already some years old and I know how I could probably make it even closer (for example the delay / ambience is still not quite right, and there's some modulation/doubling thing happening that's not there yet). At the risk of sounding condescending, I have never understood why every synth needs to have a patch that is supposed to be "the Jump sound", and it doesn't even get the basic things right. To be fair, to get really close, you also need to use some things that could be considered mixing and producing rather than part of the synth sound itself, but at least those patches could have things like the filter envelope correct.
Like I said, nothing wrong with a cool soft synth brass with a slow filter attack (those are my favourite type of sounds, I never get tired of them), just please don't call them jump this or jump that.
