Number of (per-voice) modulators

Hello,

is there a technical / conceptual reason that the number of per-voice and normal modulators is so "small" compared to what Melda plugins otherwise allow the user to do (especially the number of modules). I completely understand that for the typical use cases the number of modulators in MSF and MXXX are enough but usually Melda stands for the extra mile in my opinion and therefore I am just curious about the reason behind that. Or is there a way to increase the number per-voice and normal modulators?
Is it planned to increase this number in the future or allow for even unlimited modulation sources?

Sorry if this question got already answered, I didn't find anything yet.

Thank you very much in advance! :)

Greetings

Well, each modulator requires CPU/memory/loading time/parameters... so a predefined count needs to be set. I could hypotetically add more, but really, if you use 8 LFOs/Envs, I don't think you will orient in your instrument anymore :D. I definitely wouldn't :D

8 LFOs/Envs is a lot !
If you need more, you can use lfo or env modules into the grid follow by a custom modulator

First of all thank you very much for your response. I totally agree that 8 (+4 if you also count in the custom modulator) is a very huge number. I am just curious why the amount of modulators is "small" compared to the number of modules in the grid (6*16=96 if I see it correctly) and you can even add additional modules with the building blocks if you want to and the CPU allows it. But you cannot do this for modulators (at least I don't know of a way to do it?). Perhaps there is really a big difference regarding CPU/memory consumption of grid modules compared to modulators, in this case it totally makes sense that the number is limited. I just thought, if you allow the user to get this many modules, why not allow him to get this many modulators if he wants to. :)

Not all modules in the grid will need their own modulator. Quite often multiple modules/parameters share modulators. Plus there are more than simply, 8 Env and 8 LFO, take a look in the per voice modulation source window, there are (from memory) around 50 there. Then there are also the global mods too.

Also you can get more per voice modulators if you use MSF inside MSF.

Just wondering, I do not know if 8 Global Modulators is enough, but ...
@Blobby19, can you give a few concrete examples where more that 8 Global Modulators in MSF could be used?

Also, you can load MSF within MXXX and get 16 more Global Modulators. This combo, or MSF/MSF could be used for Proofs of Concept.

Don't get me wrong please, I highly appreciate what Melda has created and by no means I wanted to critize anything here, I know that there are huge possibilities with all the features. I just asked because unlimited modulators would be something like the icing on the cake, at least in my opinion. ;)
Your last sentence made me wonder, I know about sharing modulators between "parent" MXXX and their "child" MXXX, which will probably also work with MXXX->MSF, but how can you share voice modulators between MSFs? Would't you have to add MSF in the generator and not in the FX grid to do this?

I am by no means a good enough sound designer to really have practical examples where the current limitation got me into trouble. I just think that there are usual synthesizers with a specific work flow (e.g. Spire, Serum..) and that there are powerhouse synthesizers (e.g. Halion, Falcon..) with which in theory you can do anything in one patch. In my opinion MSF is part of the second category, and usually in this group there are no limitations (except the CPU of the user). I think MSF is on a good way to surpass both, only missing some improved sampler features, granular synthesis, some MIDI features and the modulation "infinity". :D
Regarding the second part of your question, please see my response to jmg8.

Don't worry - nobody is criticising you. We are both interested and also offering workarounds while we discuss the idea.
:)

And, yes, I'm pretty sure that you are right, the per-voice Modulation Sources work only within each MSF instance.

Hehe well, perhaps at some point there will be a dynamic of mods, but that's quite problematic, so let's leave it like this, and let's see when someone finally uses up all the mods :D.
