I have a feature suggestion for MCabinet. Or maybe it can already do it, but I think not.

I see there are some things that close to what I'm going to ask for. I see that we can analyze a folder full of IR's to generate an "average" EQ profile. I also see that we can create A,B,C and D presets using different profiles and morph between them to create an in between profile/preset.

What I could like as an additional option would be the ability to use more than one EQ Profile at the same time, in a layered fashion...and able to export an IR based on that layering.

So for example, my real guitar cab has two different celestion speakers on it. A Vintage30 and another one, can't remember which right now, that has a little more low end and high end clarity. When I play through this cab I hear BOTH speakers at the same time and the result sound is full, lush, defined and punchy. I love it.

Alright to duplicate this with IR's, I can try to "average" IR's between the two speaker types.. I can try to morph between two presets based on the two IR's.. But neither of those options is really quite the same as layering them both together.

So I think MCabinet would be really cool if we could have say, A,B, C and D all active in parallel, and mixing down their results to the final output, with the ability to control the mix between them, to be able to put separate processing on each one in terms of resonators, EQ bands, etc.. all the same stuff we can now do to the one currently active profile, let us do all that to 4 of them in parallel and combined together. And in addition, let us generate an exported IR based on that...

A mixer for the profiles would be nice. I like to add my cab IRs to each of the 16 different profiles, separate mic distance/mic for each one. So if I have a Neumann from a foot a away on profile 4 and an AKG from two inches in profile 8, it would be cool to have a mix of them together...and to go with Dewdman42’s fr, being able to export that mix as an IR would be super cool. So big +1

You could ask for a multi band version of the plugin. If the crossover is in disabled mode it will run up to 6 instances in parallel. This would also give options for frequency based crossovers to split different cabs, like use one that is good for bass in the low band and one that has a bright treble in the high band etc. Not sure if Vojtech will say yes to this, but it's worth an ask.

In the meantime there are things you can do. Load both IRs into MConvolution, one in slot A and the other B. Set the ratio to 50% or wherever sounds good. This will give you a balance of the two (not average but parallel). Next set dry wet to 100% wet.
Now put another MConvolution before and after (3 instances in total). In the last instance press record and in the first instance press test tone. This will generate a new IR that you can name and save. Now you can simply load this new IR into MCabinet.

Its not that hard to just run multiple instances of MCabinet in parallel in the host, but the one thing I'd really like to be able to do is export a single IR that has the entire multi-cab profile saved into a single IR.

MConvolution I don't own or know anything about it, not in the budget now. it can somehow combiner IR's into one? This ought to be in MCabinet too.

Anyways mixing IRs actually doesn't make that much sense (while would be possible with the MB version). Essentially each of them is just an EQ curve in a way and the whole point behind MCabinet was to generalize it all - take some IRs to get a profile and then use the resonators and wideners to make it "different" e.g. just by clicking the seed until you find the sound you like, expect just randomly selecting IRs, which is imho just oldschool and would take infinite time, at least to me :D

That said, the combination of your 2 cabinets is somewhere between the seeds ;). Just need to find one and perhaps you could even find a better one!

Unfortunately the average between two is not the same as two cabinets layered and that is very unfortunate you don’t understand the need and request. I agree mcabinet is about getting away from a million ir’s but we analyze ir’s as a starting point or we can analyze the average of several but we don’t have a way to analyze several cumulatively so that the result will be one generic profile eq profile that can be further enhanced if desired of course, but based an eq profile that would result in the same thing as layering rather then averaging.

For example if one ir has high bass and flat, the other ir has flat and high treble, the average would be bass slightly high and treble slightly high but a layered result would be high bass, high treble and flat everywhere else. Well I think, I don’t know the dsp involved just saying mcabinet would be supremely helpful to be if I could actually combine two IR’s and then be able to do all the mcabinet tweaks to that resulting eq profile and then even export it as a simple single ir for use elsewhere

I already told you how to easily make this layered IR, just use MConvolution. Plus Vojtech said he will consider MCabinetMB, which will allow you to layer up to 6 IRs. Why would you then need to export it as a single IR? If you really do need to do that, surely it would be relatively rare and MConvolution will work just fine.

With due respect, I do not see the point of a multi band cabinet, other then similarity to other melda tools. I do see a point to multi-cabinet handling. The built in dynamic eq already provides multi-band functionality.

Ultimately the goal of mcabinet is to create a single preset/profile that sounds pleasing like a single hypothetical algorithmic guitar cab that sounds how we like. How we get to that sound that we like is the interesting challenge. I’m just saying the ability to combine cab Ir’s cumulatively in the same way as layering multiple cabs would be helpful.

The reason for exporting an ir is to be able to use it outside the computer in ir loaders after we have synthesized our ideal guitar cab sound. Doing so will lose the non-linear fx such as dynamic-eq that are built into mcabinet so my preference is to use mcabinet as the sound processor anyway because of those features. But it would still be helpful to be able to combine two or more IR’s starting out, into one single mcabinet preset/profile that has a blended sound to it, able to save that as a simple single preset in MCabinet and export a single simple IR too for the reason stated above.

The MCabinetMB would allow you to have up to 6 cabinets, and while usual multiband plugins let you just spectrally spread the signal into multiple bands, this would be a very different beast ;). Parallel bands would be the easiest one, some tutorials:

I would like to understand more about the resonators too. The manual doesn't really explain them very much, roll the dice until it sounds good, but its really not clear to me what to do with them other then roll the dice and twist the knobs until i like it. The smoothing knob and flattening knobs make perfect sense of course.

Once thing you can answer for sure to be clear, do the resonators pre-calculate their job, such that if I were to setup an MCabinet profile/preset using resonators and wideners...I like the way it sounds...then I export the IR...will that exported IR have the complete "resonated" IR and function the same way? Or do your resonators do something more dynamic to the sound while processing actual sound?

For now what I guess I can do to try to blend two IR's is import them into A and B..then visually look at the graphs of each one and try to manually manipulate one of them to become what I think would be be a blended curve.

I also didn't completely understand what is possible with the harmonic filter that is inside the EQ band editor.. what that does...what is possible and whether that is linear and would be exported to an IR if desired, or non-linear and requires MCabinet to process the guitar sound and apply that FX.

The modulator is an entirely new level of thinking that I want to mess around with and put more thought into before i even ask any questions. On the surface it seems like mainly it would allow for non-real-world creative sound design...but then on the other hand..it might be possible to do some non-linear tricks with it that might be reasonably close enough to realism to just add some subtle movement in a nice way...I don't know...save that discussion for another day.
