I have recently resumed making some experiments with physical modelling in MSoundFactory, and I have two questions:
1) When I analyze a sample in the Modal Filter, am I doing something like (as a distant analogy) making a new MCharacter preset with the levels of the different harmonics? I mean: it is not like using an Impulse Response, because the IR has a diachronic time dimension (it evolves along time), while, for example, an MCharacter preset is like freezing a single instant without any temporal dimension, so, in a way, in MSF it's more like this, with no temporal dimension, right?
2) Is there a tool in MSF to copy an envelope directly from a sample, in detail? Like analyzing a sample and copying, say, 16 or 32 points from its dynamic envelope, instead of trying to imitate it painfully with a simple ADSR envelope, manually? It would be very useful!

1) In a way yes. It's different, because MCharacter does that spectrally, but the principle is similar.

Nice to hear! (Well… nice to read, actually.)
I would try to make realistic brass instruments and string instruments, and the temporal dimension – and therefore the dynamic envelope, is crucial, in those cases.

Just curious: If you have a graphic of a sample, (like those found in a sampler) could it be used as the background for an envelope editor to allow one to draw a 'copy' of the sample's dynamic envelope?
That's how I would envision it working.

Hehe, I also made a piano (a few months back)
But it was taking too much time to get it right, it is quite hard. I will take a look at what you have made and also share mine with you. You may find some idea to take?

Oh, I thought it would be the settings to check out, not just audio. Send me over the device to look at please.
The demo audio, sound quite good. I can obviously hear that it isn't a real piano. But then companies can spend a lifetime trying to get this right, it is a very difficult thing to emulate. Are you using 3 strings per note?

It's more like a harp imho. The main component missing is imho the actual resonance of the huge piano wood. Really difficult to simulate imho. Anyways soon I'll hopefully sample the most highend model of Steinway, which is just impossibly awesome, so fingers crossed, we'll hopefully have a beautiful piano soon. I myself am a piano lower and I just didn't find "the" VST piano yet.

jmg8 - Yeah, I'm finding it pretty hard to get right. I used 3 modal filters per note. The problem with using the string is that you don't have control over the harmonics. I believe you can adjust the harmonics if you put an allpass filter in the resonators loop. Hopefully Vojtech adds that in the future, but for now I used the modal filter instead. I think the sound of the hammer is off and I think maybe if I improve that it will sound more realistic. Anyway here is the patch. Please share yours too, I want to see how you did things.

That said, I'd like to make a PM version, not only because of the options it will bring, but also because I can use it as a spring board for other ideas I have such as bowed pianos, piano pads, etc. I need the basic version to sound right first though.

I'll get the version I did over to you, next time I am in the studio.
I used the unison module with 3 voices and the string placed inside it. I imagine each time the hammer strikes the 3 strings it would be slightly different, so I created some very subtle variations for each string. Also when defining the voices, it simulates the age of the piano (or how out of tune the 3 strings are to each other) which sounds really cool.

It is way high on the CPU (sorry about that)
I use the first MTurboReverb in the FX modular to simulate the cab resonance, however that was before the release of MCabinet, so I would probably use that now instead.

jmg8 - thanks. Sorry it took so long to get back to you, I've been a bit busy. Anyway it sounds pretty good. Interesting approach. What are you using the OSC for? I've had better success using MCabinet than the reverb, but adding reverb afterwards and combing them seems to work best.

I tried to adjust some things and I think the latest version is sounding much better. I actually found an IR of a piano soundboard which helped. I still think a few more things need to be adjusted though. The initial hit sound is more important than I first thought. I wish I had a sample of a piano hammer. Anyway here is a new sound sample.
