XY-Pads: DAW automation vs. MIDI CC?

I was wondering what is the best way to control and record/automate XY-Pads in Zebra? I understand that DAW automation values are smoothed in Zebra (making them less suited for fast automation), and that MIDI CC only has 128 steps (making it steppy). Is there also a way to automate the XY-Pads both fastly and accurately? For instance, when filter cutoff is mapped to one of the XY-Pad axes (like in a lot of presents). So how are you guys controlling the XY-Pads?

AFAIK all internal processing in u-he plugins is done in blocks of 16 samples. So this is the buffer within automation will be smoothed. It should still allow pretty fast automation.

Cutoff step automation turns out quite audibly slewed, though, inappropriately in certain situations… so probably best to choose midi for quick timbral modulation.
Brzzzzzzt.
