Anyone here good at getting that huge soundtrack timpani sound?

I've never got it quite right.

Any pointers you'd like to share :)

Well if you can't do it kevvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv I'm unlikely to be able to help you. :(

I would usually expect to have to come to you for questions like that.

Hit them with chickens?

I guess the best way would be to find some massive samples.... or sample them yourself.
I play guitar

Eq and reverb. Reverb's hard - you have to program it so there's a huge sense of space, whilst still being plausible, and not completely washing everything out.

Layering with other percussion (like orchestral bass drum and orchestral cymbals) will also help add "hugeness".

Kim.

Unkind of you, dear chap.

A question's a question.

Jeez ... thanx for your thoughts. Layering to get a better core sound seems like a good start.

Any more suggestions out there?

Percussive adventures 2 have a sound like this

Also take into consideration your sound is only as good as its recording. What's your source material from?

I'm actually pretty impressed that FM is capable of some great BIG REAL tympani sounds. With the right patch, effects and mix, you could fool an orchestra. ;)

A mish mash of stuff from all places ... except a dedicated timp library.

But it's the forceful hugeness I can't quite get the way I want (no double entendre intended  )

Actually this is quite a good suggestion.

I quite often layer the sounds of 2 similar but not-quite-the-same percussion sounds if I want the sound to be huge.

If you wanted a crescendo you could have to midi parts with the timpani part increasing in velocity at one rate and the other percussion increasing in velocity more towards the end of the run.

This means that right at the end you have a heart-stopping thunder that blows you off your feet.

You'd have to pick the other sound carefully though.
How about some nice big TOM-sounding percussion hits? You might need to tune them a bit.

I hope this was a little more helpful than my last response.

Have you checked out: http://www.projectsam.com/freesounds_377342.html
I got some decent free timpani samples there although I didn't see the same ones when I checked their site recently. They do have some other interesting looking percussion freebies though.

Cheers, mate

As it happens I've never got Terminator drums to my satisfaction.

Meanwhile this thread has pooled velocity, layering and sample ideas to get the huge effect.

Any specific thoughts on verb and eq (or gate?) to add?

btw Recently Devon got this new sample set of Huge Drums or some similar title, with the "bigness" built into the sample.

Jeez has a point. Besides i think you need to find the right sound.

Personally, i like the natural studio kit very much. Very realistic. Then, with the right effects you can give that timpanis any colour you want.

not into tymp myself but if the problem is that the reverb sounds unnatural due to perceived loudness of the tymps not acting naturally, try cutting a bit of the reverb and creating a second reverb, w/ seperate eq et c. to replace those 'huge' aural cues w/o flooding your main verb.

?? :p
