it's no wonder that some people reckon IDM stands for "inconceivably dull meanderings"!

*ducks* :-o
So true... but there are still some people on the fringes who are really exploring. The mainstream of any genre gets tired pretty fast.
phew! not just me then... I expected to get burned at the stake for being a heretic
Nah, nothing new. This has been dealt with on many IDM-related message boards and mailing lists during the last couple of years.

Anyway, yeah, sure the genre isn't fresh anymore and it's getting stale, but I think it's too easy to say things like "it's no longer innovative but has become stuck in a rut...". IMO IDM is just getting over it's primary state of and is in the process of settling down into a real genre. You know, IDM was just the name of the classic mailing list and it just stuck to denote this particular community and its preferences. Well, people are getting less and less like-minded, so the community is disintegrating. IDM itself is transforming. I find it to be pretty obtuse and quite simply false to deduse from this that the "genre" is dying. It's just changing.

On a different note, I find it very pleasing to see how well a lot of this kind of out-there music is known here, just as it pleased me earlier to see that quite a few people from here are well aware of a lot of top electroacoustic stuff. For example, I wouldn't have thought that such a gem as Ø's 'Metri' would get a mention in this thread. Yay, Mika Vainio and Ilpo Väisänen have lot of excellent solo stuff out, check it...

Oh, and the one IDM(ish) record that has hitten me the hardest lately is Twine's excellent and unique s/t album on Ghostly. Otherworldly...

One of my favourites also... Mad electronica with STRUCTURE

Jaga Jazzist is also well worth checking out. Complex glitchy cut up jazzy stuff with depth, emotion and structure 8)
Music with dinner is an insult both to the cook and the violinist.

My favourite techno records are still the first seven ep's on Sahko plus 'Metri' - ordered the first Ø single on a recommendation from someone back in 94 and was blown away. Collected the rest over the next few years. The Hertsi EP is my favourite - I believe it's either by Ilpo V or Sami Salo, not sure which. Very few have hybridised electroacoustics and techno with such austerity, beauty and finesse.

... surrounded by gangs of shaven headed Dieters in octagonal glasses with laptops...
There I am again! Shaven head, check, diet, check, laptop, check, octagonal glasses... well, I do need to get some new frames... :D

IDM is just getting over it's primary state of and is in the process of settling down into a real genre.
To me that sounds like a change from "daring and new" to "same old shit." :P

The first Trade compilation mixed by Tony De Vit and Reactivate 10 mixed by Blu Peter. They influenced a whole generation of Hard House and Trance DJ's/musicians/clubbers around the world. 8)

Why? He innovated with electronic dance music at a time when it had become stagnent. The kind of tracks he was playing were harder, faster and more extreme than any other DJ in 95/96. Many of the DJ/musicians on the club scene were coming to Trade to listen to his sets and were asking him to play their tracks. His radio show was pushing the boundaries for what was acceptable as dance music. It may seem like run of the mill now but in 96 the hardhouse/trance scene was tiny in the UK. He championed it and spread it around the UK by DJing all over the place.

Don't forget that Warp, Orbital, the Orb were all originally pitching their sound to the clubs. IDM includes club music as well as the more esoteric knob twiddling. And if it comes to defining what types of electronic music have been most influential then I believe that is club music whether it's drum'n'bass, trance, garage, hip hop etc. etc.

I like banging techno as much as the next person but I would never call that kind of hard house IDM. For me IDM is cerebral stuff that you listen to at home and has interesting music and production ideas (often beatless or with unconventional timesignatures - you can't dance to that). Club music is good but can't really be judged on the same merits as IDM - it's certainly not what I would consider cerebral

I'm not being snooty or pedantic, just pointing out that that's not what most people (i believe) would consider IDM...
