Psuper wrote: Mon Nov 25, 2019 5:34 am Townsend L22 seems to be the better mic, and alone costs $1500 (with additional models available only with a separate UAD interface)...
The Townsend mic comes with all the mic models they emulate. The UAD plugins just has emulations of specific studio collections.
I've read countless articles about the Townsend and UAD and emulations and I'm still not fully getting it. So the Sphere L22 comes with all the emulations. But UAD also has this here specific to UAD and the L22:
https://www.uaudio.com/uad-plugins/mic- ... ction.html and putnam

I know I'd be happy with the mic and a few solid default emulations (I'm sure to find the 'one' I prefer for my voice and stick with it), however I also don't want to potentially miss out on any 'extras', especially when I'd potentially be plucking down a decent buck for it all.

@ InsertNameHere thanks for the Slate heads up for BF. I'm really hoping both Townsend and Slate pop up some sales.
Have you tried Vital?

https://www.pluginboutique.com/articles/1558

It just says it's an exclusive coupon for "owners of iZotope products", and doesn't specify which products may be necessary. But of course right now you get Nectar 3 Elements for free with any purchase at PB, so it sounds like you'd register that first and then you'd be free and clear to register the Tonal Balance Bundle. That bundle is normally $699!
A huge thank you to Ceej for this one. I'm a long-time iZotope customer with a bunch of seriously poor/expensive "Loyalty Offers" in my personal account. It's crazy bad. For example, my account shows Ozone 9 Advanced for $199, Neutron 3 Advanced for $299 and Nectar 3 Upgrade for $149.

I've been on the lookout for a good deal on Ozone 9 Advanced and for $199 I just got that plus another $448 of software.

Nice one!

Clarification on Best Service's free "Halls of Fame 3" reverb with any purchase "worth at least € 99": "Didn´t we have that last year already? Right, but this year there are 6 other different virtual reverbs to choose from!"

[Edit: didn't see the "worth at least 99 euros" initially!]

Awesome! Yeah, I'm being very tempted by that offer for exactly the same reason. I own Music Production Suite 2 and the "loyalty" upgrade offer to MPS 3 is close to insulting at $399. Yes, MPS 3 now includes the Exponential reverbs, but c'mon. This $199 offer would update the two pieces (Ozone and Neutron) that have been updated since MPS 2 which is all I really care about. Frankly, even $199 for a full MPS 2->3 upgrade is higher than I'd like, but I may succumb.

What really lit a fire under me in terms of mastering was having 2 out of 10 tracks on my next album professionally mastered. I got a lot of good technical feedback and information from them. That gave me the motivation and pointed me in the right direction to bring the rest of the tracks up to the same standard as well as I could. I've really raised my game -- I mean, I've done my own "mastering" for quite a while now, but it was pretty basic level-matching stuff.

I also read a couple more books on mixing and mastering, wondering if anything else would click, but didn't really find much insight there. A little confirmation, maybe.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience. :tu: I have tried to get my stuff mastered a couple of times, but couldn't because of price. Perhaps I should give it a go.

By the way, do you mean that getting books really won't help as much?

Everyone learns differently, requires different things to get into their zone. I tended to agree re books only confirmed what I had already learned rather than adding new info. But it may be different for you, perhaps you should go for the pdf deal and if anything you'll come stronger out the other side.
I personally struggle to read pdfs, the format isnt pleasant on my eyes.

Last black friday I bought Manipulator and was underwhelmed with it. Its powerful no doubt but not nearly as immediate as I had hoped. I havent used it yet in a production yet, thats a sign too. Anyone had any positive use of it?

I learn OK from books generally, it's just that the material didn't cover much that was useful to me. One of them had a lot of tips about specific mixing issues with drums, guitar, bass and vocals, which might be more useful to other people -- but I make noisy dark ambient / drone :) Some of the advice about compressor choices and settings would have been useful, except that I'd read some of the same advice online for free. The other principles it covered where more of a review to me at this point.

And yeah, getting even just two tracks mastered did cost me a bit, but I considered it an educational investment that will help me on future releases too. The advice specific to my own music, and the engineer's description of what he did, was very helpful.
